The Bible used in this ceremony was that of American
Revolutionary soldier Moses Tyler. Tyler's wife
brought the Bible to Washington, DC after Moses'
death to receive her widow's pension. During the
time period around Revolutionary War, it was customary
for families to use their Bible as a means of
identification. The National Archives has hundreds
of family Bibles from this period.
