Previous to getting his own show, Angel had never won a Gold on Buffy, and his previous best score was for Enemies with 71 lines, and had averaged only 20.86 lines per episode in season 3 of Buffy. As the star of a new show he quickly improved that personal best, starting with a Gold and 79 for City Of, and over the course of the series averaging 73.00 lines per episode, two above his personal best, three and a half times better than he’s BtVS season 3 score, and nearly 400 lines higher than his entire BtVS score. He also picked up 16 Golds, 5 Silver and one bronze medals in total, with the high point of the season coming for The Prodigal’s 109 lines, and had another 100 line beating episode with Lonely Hearts(103). Still Angel did have his low points, taking only a 49 and bronze for the Bachelor Party, still only 8 of Angel’s BtVS episodes were better than this score.

Cordy also did well out of the new Show. On Buffy she’d picked up a total of 5 medals (2 of them were Gold), and although she failed to pick up any Gold medals in season 1, she did pick up 8 Silver medals (I Fall To Pieces(54), Rm V/A View(61), Parting Gifts(68), Somnmbulist(43), Expecting(49), She(39), The Ring(51) and To Shashu In LA(56)) and 5 Bronze medals, with bronze medal game Eternity(83) providing her with her highest scoring episode of the season. Her lowest score came with Sanctuary(7) Her average of 41.22 lines/episode is more than double the 18.00 lines/episode she was getting in BtVS season 3.

Wes was the final crossover character to become a regular in season 1, and he too vastly improved on his BtVS season 3 score, where as a reoccurring character he’d picked up just one bronze medal, and an average of 22.44. He nearly doubled this average to 40.15 lines/episode, and picked up 2 silvers(I’ve Got You Under My Skin(54) and Sanctuary(45)), and 4 bronze medals. He’s highest episode, however was Eternity(55) an episode that he did not even win a medal for. His lowest score of 29 came from She and The Prodigal.

Doyle as a character only survived 9 episodes, but in that time made a phenomenal impact scoring 3 Golds(In The Dark(55), The Bachelor Party(68), and Hero(92)), and 5 bronze medals, and only failed to win a medal once (Sense and Sensitivity(34)), which was also he’s lowest scoring episode. He’s highest episode being his death exit episode Hero, with 92 lines. Doyle averaged 54.77 lines/episode, a phenomenal score. Doyle’s ex-wife Harry Doyle, only appeared in one episode, but the Doyle name is associated with strong players, and Harry was no different taking silver for the Bachelor Party(51), and reducing Angel to his only Bronze of the season. In Memory of Glen Quinn 1970-2002, Rest in Piece.

Kate appeared in a total of 9 episodes during season 1, and was not only the first reoccurring character to pick up a medal with the Silver for Lonely Hearts(61), she was also the first reoccurring character to pick up a Gold medal for Sense and Sensitivity(75). She picked up a further silver medal for The Prodigal(66). Whilst her father Trevor Lockley picked up a bronze for his death episode The Prodigal(39).

Rebecca Lowell, is not a name that is instantly recognizable (actress who drugs Angel), but it should be for the phenomenal impact the character made in her one and only episode Eternity(124). Not only did this score make Rebecca the first one-off guest star character in both the Angel and Buffy series to win Gold, but it is also the highest score any character has got in one episode on Angel. So surprising is this result that I have re-watched the episode, to check the transcripts are correct. It ranks Rebecca as the 6th chattiest character in the first season of Angel. Five other one-off guest star characters also did well, Harry Doyle won silver, as mentioned above. Also taking silver was the girl Angel couldn’t save, Tina, for City Of(39). Magic goods auctioneer Barney won Bronze for Parting Gifts(67), whilst Penn took bronze for Somnambulist(35) and Seth Anderson won bronze for I’ve Got You Under My Skin(38).

Lindsay proved to be the outright winner of the Wolfram and Hart Lawyers, as although he appeared in only 5 season one episodes, he managed to picked up a Gold Medal for Blind Date(65), and finished 7th in the season, whilst his co-conspirators Lilah and Lee both failed to pick up any medals, and Lee was left at the disadvantage of being killed off in Blind Date. Finally Holland Manners picked up the final W&H medal with the bronze medal for Blind Date(38). (Blind Date was a bit of a W&H centric episode you could say)

From the crossover characters Buffy came out on top with a Silver for I Will Remember you(65), and a bronze for Sanctuary(44), and Faith picked up a silver for Five by Five(44), somewhat surprisingly failing to score a medal in Sanctuary. Spike also surprisingly failed to get a medal for In The Dark, scoring only a 26, whilst Oz and Darla also failed to flourish, but Darla did finished the season in a better position than she started it.

Finally future regular Gunn made a strong impression in his first episode War Zone(56), and picked up a Silver medal. However he failed to make much Impact in the remaining two episodes.
