David Fury

Co-Executive Producer

Despite a reputation for disliking Spike and his fans, David Fury has written several very prominent Spike episodes, including not only 4 of Spike’s 10 most prominent episodes, but the most prominent Spike episode, the Buffy the vampire slayer episode Crush(111). Such a trend has continued over into Angel, where Fury is now partly responsible for the top two prominent Spike episodes thus far, Just Rewards(98) (with Ben Edlund) is Spike’s second most prominent episode (after Crush), whilst Destiny(88) (with Steven DeKnight) ranks as his joint fifth highest, despite this, Angel won both these episodes with two 100 breaking scores, 109 for Just Rewards and 105 for Destiny. Fury has penned a total of 10 Angel episodes (4 were co-written), Lonely Hearts, an Angel 100 line breaking episode, Parting Gifts (with Jeannie Renshaw) another episode won by Angel(79), Disharmony, won by Cordy, but also Harmony’s most prevalent episode at 75 lines. The Price, again won by Angel. The House Always Wins, a surprising ensemble, actually won by Gunn, but that also saw Fred and Lorne doing well, Awakening, co-written with Steve DeKnight is another Angel 100 line breaker, whilst Action Packed Salvage saw Faith winning the episode, closely followed by Wes. Finally Peace Out was won surprisingly by season 4 big bad Jasmine, but also featured prominent Connor. So its fair to say Fury’s favouritism has been a little random over the years. Whilst Angel is no doubt less likely to win a Fury penned episode, if he does he wins it comfortably (Four out of Angel’s 6 victory’s have been 100 line breakers, and Angel has only broken the 100 line boundary ten times). One Character to look out for in a David Fury episode is Harmony, Fury rated her as his second favourite character at the Comic Con, after Faith, and she is the only character that Fury has won the “most pro” award for (on Buffy), though such favouritism has so far failed to transfer over to Angel season 5 to any great extent.

David Fury came to the staff of Mutant Enemy in an unusual way, turning down a full time job offer not once but twice. Initially offered a job in season 1 of Buffy, he turned it down to take up another job, but following the cancellation of that series he wrote a freelance Buffy script with wife and former writing partner Ellin Hampton (Go Fish), again offered the chance to join the staff of Buffy, he again turned it down, this time to spend more time with his family, he did however continue to write freelance and in season 3 penned Helpless and Choices (both solo). With a third job offer Fury finally succumbed, joining not only to Buffy as Producer, but agreeing to write the second episode of Angel (Lonely Hearts). He continued to occasionally write for Angel for the first three seasons, often bought in when Buffy characters crossed over for the first time (Wes in Parting Gifts and Harmony in Disharmony) but also when the lack of available writers necessitated (The Price). In Season 4 his part time gig was made official and he joined the staff of Angel as Consulting Producer (a part time position), though in fact he penned more episodes of Angel that year than in his full time job at Buffy, penning The House Always Wins, Awakening (with Steve DeKnight), Salvage and Peace Out. With the end of Buffy, Fury joined the writing staff full time as Co-Executive Producer (a rank he held at Buffy for the last two seasons), and he has thus far co-written two episodes. Fury is also an actor, he actually regards acting as his profession with writing as a sideline, though he’s sideline has certainly been the more successful avenue. He has however made cameo roles in both Buffy (Once More With Feeling, Selfless) and Angel (Reprise). Fury will write and direct episode 12, Your Welcome (the One Hundredth episode).
