Having set himself up for the best five episode run record, Angel went and blew it with this game, falling short by just five lines of the required 67 lines, all is not lost for Angel’s record setting attempt, a score of 74 lines next week will see him break the 444 lines in five episode record he set back in season 3, but his missed out on his best chance. Angel went wrong because he ignored the simple Buffy tactics for dealing with a Spike centric episode, rule 1) talk to Spike, rule 2) talk to the others about Spike, rule 3) He has a soul now. Whilst mild attempts were made were made at the first two rules, involving a couch scene and a meeting with Fred, ignoring the third rule cost him the game, and allowed Fred to come into the game with this all important stance. Result Fred who obeyed the rules, but didn’t have the ‘I’m the lead’ bonus took 76, beating Angel for the first time since the Magic Bullet.

The winner though was Spike, taking his first Gold medal since Lies my parents told me, and the fourth of his career, as well as 88 lines. Spike utilised Angel’s mistakes and Fred’s tactics, to great effect, having conversations with both of them, before taking the risky step of cutting himself off totally from all the other regulars, and talking only to Pavayne and the other manifestations. This was indeed risky, as although it prevented any of the regulars from talking to him and therefore limited their scoring opportunities, it also gave Spike much fewer people to speak to, and those he could weren’t looking for deep conversation. However Spike offset this potential problem, with the simple but genius tactic of speaking to himself, and carrying on conversations with Fred when she couldn’t even see him genius. Spike’s form at present is impressive, in fact in the last 5 episodes Spike’s appeared in he has scored more lines than in any other point in his career, scoring 245 lines in Chosen(30), Conviction(1), Just Rewards(98), Unleashed(28) and Hell Bound(88), 2 more than he scored in the Spuffy dominated episodes of Once More With Feeling through to Gone.

The rest of the players faired less well. Gunn and Wes focussed on the plot with mild success, Pavayne did well out of Spike, and utilised voice over to great effect. Most insane tactic award for this game must go to Lorne, as he ignored not only the plot, but forgot to substitute for anything storywise to make up for it. Lorne slumped to his lowest ever scoring game as a result, scoring just one line.
