The season
began with The Freshman, and yet again Buffy dominated yet
again, scoring 160, her highest of the season, and second best
ever score (after Never Kill a Boy on the first date’s 164). Buffy slipped up
more this season and took only 15 Golds, loosing Beer Bad 56-60 to Xander, Wild at Heart 53-88 to Oz, The Initiative 51-103 to Riley. A New Man 90-110 to Giles. Who Are you 39-108 to Faith. Where the Wild
Things Are 26-71 to Xander (which became
the first episode in which Buffy failed to pick up a medal) and New Moon Rising 64-86 to Willow. Buffy achieved only
five 100 line breaking
episodes, her lowest episode being the previously mentioned Where the wild
things are’s 26 In comparison season 7 Buffy had 14 Gold
episodes, four Silver and one Bronze. Her highest was Help(121) and her lowest
is Touched(33). Her average rating in season 4 was down
from the first three seasons (118.4, 95.5, 95.3) to 81.9. In season 7
she had a 76.1line average
Willow Improved on
her line count from season 3’s 990, to 1070 in season 4.
She also scored 1 Gold (New Moon Rising, 86), 6 Silvers
and 6 and a half Bronze medals (sharing honours with Riley in Superstar). Her
Silver episodes were The Freshman(52), Wild At Heart(80), Pangs(72), Something Blue(72), Who Are You(49), Primeval(62). Her highest
scoring episode was New Moon Rising and her lowest
Hush(22), which is
obviously a low scoring episode in general. Further to this Willow became the
first character (aside from Buffy) to have 6 straight medal
placed episodes, getting a minimum of a bronze between Fear Itself and Something Blue. In comparison
Willow has had one
Gold, 2 Silver and 1 Bronze in season 7, a high of 104(Killer In Me) and a low of 6(Lies My Parents
Told Me). Her average in season 4 was up from the first 3 seasons (47.8, 45.6, 45.0) to 48.6. In season 7
this figure was 31.2.
Riley became the highest scoring
and ranking debut character (excluding season 1) when he beat Xander by one line to
take third, despite only appearing in 20 episodes (he was absent from Living
Conditions and the Harsh Light of Day). I should
probably mention that this margin is far too close to be absolutely certain
that Riley finished above
Xander. Riley became the
Seventh character to get a Gold with The Initiative(103), and also the
fifth character to score more than 100 lines in an episode, and also the first recurring
character to do so (since that was his status at the time). He also achieved 3
silver and four and a half Bronzes (sharing honours with Willow in Superstar). Riley’s silver
episodes were Hush(30), Doomed(56) and Goodbye Iowa(78). The Initiative was Riley’s highest
scoring episode, and his lowest in which he appeared was Wild At Heart(3), as a guest
star and Restless(22) as a regular. Following Willow’s 6 straight
medal placements Riley became the second and only other character to
achieve this feat, when he scored a minimum of a bronze from Hush through to This years girl, he also only
narrowly (2 lines) missed out of a bronze in Who Are You, which
combined with Superstar would have taken this stretch to 8 episodes. Riley has now
departed from BtVS, his last episode was As You Were. His line
average was 37.2.
Xander ‘s decline
continued as he was narrowly beaten to take fourth (assuming no errors). He did
however pick up his third and fourth Gold Medals, though not with the margin he
was accustomed to with the first two. Beer Bad was won by 4 lines, as Xander got a 60, and Where the Wild
Things Are by 15, with a score of 71, this was also
his joint top episode, the other being Restless, which
together with Fear Itself(61) made up the two Silver medals Xander achieved in
season 4. He also picked up 2 bronze medals. Xander’s lowest scoring
episode was Who Are You(5). In comparison, Xander had 2 silver
episodes and 4 bronze, with a high of 54 (Selfless) and low of 2(Lies My Parents
Told Me) in season 7. Xander’s average in
season 4 was down on season 3’s 37.0, season 2’s 52.6 and season 1’s
55.8 to 33.8. In season 7
it was just 29.2 (these averages are for episodes the
character appeared in).
Giles declined
further as he dropped down to Fifth. He did however pick up his first Gold
episode with A New Man(110), which saw him become the Eighth character
to achieve a Gold. Further to this he only picked up two bronze. A New Man was his
highest scoring episode, indeed of the series, his lowest of the season was Superstar(10) Giles is no longer a
regular, but in season 7 he has had two silver medals Bring On the
Night(38) and Lies My Parents
Told Me(59) and one bronze medal. His average for season
4 was down on the first 3 seasons (53.5, 40.7, 33.7) to 32.1. In season 7
it was only 22.5, in episodes he appeared in.
Spike, previously a
re-occurring character became a regular in season 4. In season 3 he had
appeared in only one episode and so had not done well in the rankings (although
still did reasonably well coming in at thirteenth), but his 12 season 2
episodes, had ranked Spike in seventh, now with the benefit of regular
status and an additional 6 episodes, he improved this ranking to sixth and
picked up 2 silver and one bronze medals. Spike’s silver episodes
were Harsh Light of Day(53), and the Yoko Factor(64), he also picked
up a 59 for his bronze
episode Something Blue. His lowest scoring episode was Wild At Heart(1), and as a regular
This Years Girl(6). In season 7 Spike had 1 Gold episode,
3 silver episodes and 2 and a half bronzes. His highest scoring episode in
season 7 in Beneath You(75) and his lowest Conversations
with Dead People(0). Spike had a line average of 26.4, compared to his
average of 23.8 in season 2. In Season 7 Spike averaged 27.7 lines per episode.
Anya became the
second recurring character to beat a regular in the rankings, after she beat Oz by 23 lines,
to steal seventh. However given that Oz only appeared in 8 episodes, and Anya 15 this is
perhaps not overly impressive. Anya did however
pick up her first silver medal with Where the Wild Things Are(56), this was
also her highest scoring episode. Her lowest in which she appeared came with Who Are You(6). Anya became a
regular in season 5 and in season 7 she had 1 Gold, and 2 bronze episodes, and
an average of 23.3. In season 4 her average was 17.9 way down on
season 3’s 26.0
Oz never the most
talkative of fellers, bowed out of BtVS in season 4, however not before he
picked up his first medal, a Gold (making him the sixth character to do so),
with the episode Wild At Heart(88), not only was this Oz’s highest
scoring episode for all seasons, it was his highest by 43 lines, until Oz’s return for New Moon Rising, in which he
achieved a 53 and also a bronze. Oz is no longer
on the show, although still alive, his last credited appearance is through
dream in Restless. Oz had an average of 30.6 lines in
season 2. which is way up on season 3’s 15.4 and season 2’s
13.5.
Tara a future,
albeit brief regular, made her debut in season 4 without success in the medals
table. Tara’s top episode came in New Moon Rising when she
scored 43. Her total of 188 lines in 12
episodes gave her an average of 15.7 in season 4. Tara is no longer a
character on BtVS, the character was killed off in the season
six episode Seeing Red, in order that the writers could advance an
arc about crayons or something.
Faith finished in
eleventh in the rankings despite appearing in only two episodes. Faith also became
the ninth character to pick up a Gold episode with Who Are You(108), which also
saw her become the sixth character to break the 100 line mark.
This high scoring episode was certainly helped by the fact that this episode
focused on Faith and Buffy having a body
switch, and all of Faith’s lines come from Faith in Buffy (BiF). Faith returned to BtVS for the final
5 episodes of season 7, having not appeared on the show since season 4, where
she won two Gold, one silver and half a bronze medal.
Professor Walsh appeared in 10
episodes, and picked up a silver for her death exit episode The I In Team(61), which saw
her pick up more lines than in the rest of the season. Walsh subsequently
appeared briefly in Primeval, as a
re-animated corpse. Walsh only appeared in season 4. Whilst Walsh’s creation Adam appeared in 7
episodes, and picked up one bronze for the episode Primeval(44), which was
also his death episode. The character subsequently appeared through dream in Restless, but only
appeared in season 4. The only other pure season 4 character to do well in the
rankings was Buffy’s room mate Kathy, who although
appearing only 2 episodes, did pick up a Silver medal for Living
Conditions(67). Kathy departed BtVS at the end of
this episode, though the character is still presumably alive.
Harmony who had been with
the show since the second episode, finally got into the medal tables with a
bronze medal for The Harsh Light of Day(54), which actually
saw her net more lines in that one episode than she had in the
previous 3 seasons combined. All this is despite the fact that the character
was killed off in Graduation Day Pt 2, and had to be
resurrected as a vampire. Joss wasn’t joking when he said Mercedes McNabb got more work
after her character was killed off. Jonathan was another of the
old high school faces to actually see collage life getting him more work.
Although only appearing in one episode he did pick up a silver medal for Superstar(67), which as in Harmony’s case gave him more
lines in that one episode than the previous 11 episodes combined.
