Buffy began the season with Lessons and a score of 112 and a Gold, her best score in a premier since season 4. The season continued well for Buffy as she outright won the first 4 episodes before loosing Selfless, not only to Anya, but also Xander and Willow, and failed to win a medal. Him Provided her with a Gold and 102, but Conversations with Dead People saw her lose out 73-72 to guest star Holden Webster.  Normal service was resumed with Sleeper’s and a 80, and she continued to win every episode until Potential, though Showtime was won with only 51 lines. Potential saw her lose out 82-62 to Dawn, and the Killer in Me saw her lose to both Wllow(104) and Kennedy(72). She then failed to win three in a row with Storyteller (114—76 to Andrew), Lies My Parents Told Me (for which she again failed to win a medal, loosing out to Spike(71), Giles(59) and Principal Woods(54)) and Dirty Girls to Faith 69-60. Further defeat occurred in Touched, which at 33 was also her lowest score of the season, where she again failed to pick up a medal, and lost out to Faith(69), Spike(48) and Kennedy(34). The season wasn’t all bad for Buffy, she did pick up 14 Golds, four Silvers and one  Bronze episode, and broke the 100 line on three occasions. Her highest scoring episode of the season came with Help(121). Buffy’s average score over the 7 seasons was 118.4, 95.5, 95.3, 81.9, 84.0, 78.4, 76.1.  Season 7 was Buffy’s worst ever season.

After last season’s success, Willow dropped 418 lines, to her worst ever score of only 686 lines. It wasn’t all bad for Willow however she did pick up one Gold medal (last season she won five), with the Killer in Me(104) which was also her third highest score of the series. As well as success in the Killer in Me, Willow achieved a further two silvers with Same Time, Same Place(82) and Showtime(38), as well as one bronze episode. Willows lowest episode came with Lies My Parents Told Me(6), which was also her worst of the series. Willow’s average score over the 7 seasons of Buffy was 47.8, 45.6, 45.0, 48.6, 35.7, 50.2 and 31.2, which just shows the scale of Willow’s drop off between season 6 and 7.

Xander, like Willow and Buffy also saw his worst season with season 7. Unlike Willow however Xander actually started the season fairly well. Although scoring only 19 in Lessons, the next 5 episodes provided Xander with 233 lines (out of his 615), with Selfless(54), Same Time, Same Place(53), Beneath You(52) and Him(47) providing Xander with his top four episodes of the season. Such a collusion of strong episodes gives a distorted view of Xander’s overall success in the season, after Him Xander completely missed out on Conversations with Dead People, the only episode Xander has ever missed, and after that episode the character failed to achieve much, a 38 and a bronze for First Date and a 37 with no medal for Potential being the highlights. Overall Xander picked up 2 silver medals (Selfless(54) and End of Days(29)) and 4 Bronze medals, though Xander’s silver medal for End Of Days was the lowest of any silver medals awarded in the series. This was simply due to the shear number of characters in the episode all receiving fairly even scores. Xander suffered his worst ever episode with Lies My Parents Told Me(2), and his average of only 29.2, was also bad in comparison to his overall performance on Buffy (55.8, 52.6, 37.0, 33.8, 32.8, 40.2 and 29.2).

In Contrast to Xander, Spike started the season very badly. Although the episode Beneath You(75) provided Spike with a silver and his best score of the season, after this episode Spike hit his worst ever run, between Same Time, Same Place and Conversations with Dead People (in which Spike failed to speak at all) Spike scored just 48 lines. Spike recovered somewhat with another silver and 64 in Sleeper, and a 43 and bronze in Never Leave Me, but was then kidnapped for two episodes and scored just 11 lines in two episodes. Spike began to make a real imprint on the season after Showtime, in the last 11 episodes scoring 360 lines (out of his 610), more than any other character save Buffy, he also picked up his third ever Gold with Lies My Parents Told Me(71), and another Silver medal with Touched(48) as well as bronzes in Get It Done and half a bronze for Chosen (which he shared with Faith). Overall Spike picked up one Gold, three Silver, and two and a half bronze medals, and averaged 27.7 lines per episode. Season 7 was his worst season since season 4, though his ranking of fourth is the highest the character achieved (though he also achieved this in season 5), and it was the closest Spike has ever come to finishing third, indeed the margin of five lines is so narrow that I cannot be certain that Xander actually had more lines than Spike.

Dawn again finished in fifth, making her the only regular to occupy the exact same place in the rankings throughout her Buffy career. The season began well for Dawn, indeed at several points during the season she was second in the rankings. Lessons saw her score a 68 and silver, and Him provided her with her highest score of the season, and the second highest of her career, as well as a Silver medal, whilst Potential provided Dawn with a Gold and 82 lines. After Potential, Dawn slumped badly, scoring only 110 lines in the remaining 10 episodes (an average of only 11 lines per episode), in 6 of the episodes Dawn scored 10 lines or less, and in Storyteller and Lies My Parents Told Me suffered her worst episodes of the series since Buffy vs. Dracula, scoring just 3. Overall Dawn picked up one Gold, two Silver, whilst averaging 24.1 lines per episode, making season 7 her worst ever (this is a common theme)

Anya also saw a massive drop off in lines (275) from last season, however she started the season bright enough despite missing Help, picking up her third Gold for Selfless(74), and Bronze medals for Same Time, Same Place(58) and Sleeper(26), as well as gaining a respectable score for Beneath You(37). But this early success fell off almost immediately after Selfless, she missed her second and third episodes of the season with Conversations with Dead People and Dirty Girls, which surely is stretching the definition of the word regular, and in Lies My Parents Told Me scored only 1 line (her worst of the series). After Sleeper she failed to win a medal in any episode, and her most successful episode came with Get It Done(31). Overall in Season 7 Anya averaged 23.3 lines per episode, for episodes she appeared in (or 20.1 if you feel Anya should have been in every episode), in the last 11 episodes of the season Anya scored just 158 lines, 10 characters did better than this, and though season 7 was a lot worse than season 6 for Anya, it was actually a narrow improvement on season 5 (11 lines)

Andrew was the only relevant character to increase his season 6 score. In season 6 Andrew had failed to win a medal, but in season 7 he won one of each kind, as Storyteller(114) saw him become the thirteenth character to pick up a Gold, and only the tenth character to pick up more than 100 lines in one episode. It also saw him achieve the second best score of the season, after Buffy’s 121 in Help. Andrew also picked up a silver and 47 for Never Leave Me, and a bronze and 27 for End of Days. He also had significant scores in Conversations with Dead People(33) and First Date(34). Andrew averaged 26.9 lines per episode and appeared in 15 episodes in total. Andrew’s former cohorts in the Troika, Jonathan and Warren both appeared, though Warren is only credited with 3 lines through flashback, and Jonathan picked up 30 lines before being murdered, and becoming reliant on Andrew’s flashbacks for a further 23 lines.

Principal Wood also made significant impact on the season for a recurring character, averaging 23.4 lines per episode, and appearing in 14 episodes. He also picked up two Silver and three bronze episodes, and in a run of four episodes picked up a medal on every occasion, scoring silvers in First Date(43) and Get It Done(49), and bronzes in Storyteller(35) and Lies My Parents Told me(54) (the other Bronze medal was for Lessons(28)), Lies My Parents Told Me was also Woods highest scoring episode.

Giles again finished in ninth position, but although he appeared in 13 episodes (5 more than season 6), he picked up 50 lines less than season 6. He did however pick up 2 silver episodes, with Bring on The Night(38) and Lies My Parents Told Me(59), he also picked up a bronze for Empty Spaces(33). Overall season 7 was Giles worst ever season, both in terms of number of lines and line average. Giles average score over the 7 seasons of Buffy was 56.0, 40.7, 33.7, 32.1, 25.3, 42.8 and 22.5.

Kennedy was the most successful of the potential slayers, picking up a silver and a 72 with the Killer in Me, and bronzes with Showtime(35) and Touched(34). She also did well in Get It Done(36). Amanda was the next most successful potential slayer, scoring a bronze for Potential(43), though she only beat the 10 line mark in one other episode (End Of Days(11)). None of the other Potentials made significant enough impact on an episode to win a medal, indeed Rona’s score of 24 in Showtime was the highest score any of the other potentials got. However 11 of season 7’s 55 qualifying characters were potentials, and combined they scored 555 lines which would have seen them finish fifth if they were treated as the same character.

The First achieved two Bronze medals for Conversations with Dead People(48) and for Bring on the Night(27), it also had a significant score in First Date(36). Rather bizarrely for a big bad, especially a season long big bad, the First actually had more lines of dialogue it the first eleven episodes than the last eleven (136 lines compared to 122). Fellow bad guy Caleb picked up a bronze for Dirty Girls(48). None of The Firsts other minions such as the ubervamps and bringers count as qualifying characters as they never spoke.

Faith returned to Buffy, after a 3 season absence, and had a phenomenal five episode run. Picking up Golds for Dirty Girls and Touched, both 69 lines, a silver for Empty Spaces(46), and shared honours with Spike in Chosen(30) for a bronze. Faith scored 232 lines in just five episodes, which is an average of 46.4 lines per episode, which is more than any other character achieved in season 7, save Buffy. Also returning after a two season absence was Angel, who picked up his first silver medal since Graduation Day part 2, with a 32 in Chosen, this is despite only being in the episode for the first 7 minutes. Angel is now the star of his own spin off, where he does considerably better than he ever did on Buffy.

Holden Webster became the first and only Buffy One-off guest star to win Gold, when he defeated Buffy 73-72 in Conversations with Dead People. This feat was undoubtedly helped by getting both the first and last line in with Buffy, and by the fact that there was only him and Buffy in either of their scenes. Holden was dusted at the end of the episode, however actor Jonathan M. Woodward will be reprising his Angel character Knox, on Season 5 of Angel. Cassie was the only other one off guest star to win a medal, picking up a silver for Help(53). Cassie also failed to survive her episode, but her image was used by the First in Conversation with Dead People (see image above).
