Q.If a parish council member perceives a problem with a staff member, what authority do we have to address the situation? Can we request that the person be reviewed/terminated if the situation is serious?

A.The pastor is the one who hires and supervises parish personnel. The only role the council plays in personnel issues are to:
  • Determine what positions are needed for parish ministry
  • Review and recommend salary and benefit packages as proposed by the finance committee
  • Review and recommend parish policies regarding staff rights and responsibilities (staff handbook) as prepared by the personnel committee.

The parish personnel committee (a sub-committee of Finance and Administrative Services) assists the pastor in developing job descriptions and, if invited by the pastor, participate in the interview process.

If a council member has a concern about a particular staff member, s/he should discuss the matter privately with the individual involved, or with the pastor. If the pastor determines that it is a council issue, he may bring it to the council for advice.
