Welcome to The Airey Neave Trust
The Airey Neave Trust commemorates the late Airey
Neave DSO OBE MC MP who, before his assassination in the Palace of
Westminster
in 1979, was
passionately concerned with two issues, freedom, for which he fought,
and the law which he practised. It was for this reason that the
promotion of the principle of Freedom under the
Law was adopted as the Trust's main objective.
In pursuit of this objective, the Trust is active in two main specific
areas:
1.Research
Since 1979 the Airey Neave Trust has encouraged
and funded research on
issues of tyranny and injustice. To the greatest extent possible
such
research is designed to have a practical impact. A range of issues
has
been studied, including slavery, torture, biological warfare,
minority
rights and compensation for the victims of violence.
The Trust has also worked closely with research institutes in
the United
States. In 2001 it organised a joint seminar attended by many
leading
British and American practitioners in the field of counter-terrorism.
This analysed the issues confronting all of us today and identified
areas
for further research.
In response to the growing terrorist threat, the work of the
Trust is
increasingly focused on the need to support those with policy
responsibilities for counter-terrorism. Two projects recently
supported
by the Trust illustrate this point.
The first project has been launched with the involvement of the
Metropolitan Police. It aims to prevent, deter, disrupt and detect
terrorist activity particularly in its preparatory stages. This
will be
achieved by improving the co-ordination of counter-terrorist activities
within specific areas, for example education and training. The
result
would be the establishment of a pool of appropriately skilled
individuals
capable of improving responses to the terrorist challenge.
The second is a two-year study on "Transnational Networks
and the
Implications for International Security". This is being undertaken
by a
member of the Cambridge Security Programme, established by Cambridge
University in response to the problems of an increasingly unstable
and
insecure world. The study will investigate the use of networks
by
criminal and terrorist organisations for activities such as
money-laundering and arms sales.
The Trustees wish to build on this work by expanding research
into
practical counter-terrorist issues. Among the proposals currently
under
consideration are radicalisation of Islamic youth, suicide bombers
and countering terrorist hostile surveillance within the UK.

Administrator, Mrs Hannah Scott.
2. Refugees
The Trust also focuses its attention on Home Office
approved refugees, already in the United Kingdom who need to
perfect their
knowledge
of English and to requalify in their professions. Support is
concentrated in the higher education field, principally post
graduate work.
