EBay founder and top VC firm invest confidence (and $8 million) in Second Life’s future

Joining a roster of clients that includes AOL, Red Hat, and Palm, among many other prestigious Internet/tech companies, Linden Lab today announced $8 million in financing from Benchmark Capital, a leading Silicon Valley investment firm; Benchmark partner and Internet guru Bill Gurley will also join Linden Lab’s board of directors. If that wasn’t enough, legendary EBay founder Pierre Omidyar's new organization, the Omidyar Network, also got in on the fun, participating in the investment. Read the entire press release here.

What does all this money and all these famous names mean to the future of Second Life? In a word, more: More support, more content, more updates and fixes-- more *world*, to explore and shape. In another word, validation: not just of Linden Lab or the technology behind Second Life, but the residents who helped build the world with the tools we gave them.

What do they know that you don't know?

Expo 2004 Showcases Top Designers in the Second Life Rag Trade

Sashaying down the catwalk they came, super models in body hugging leather outfits, in flowing ballroom gowns, and even in a couple wedding dresses that brought sighs from the capacity crowd. Originally conceived by fashion-impaired embedded journalist Hamlet Linden as a modest talent search for some the world’s most popular designers, New World Notes Fashion Expo 2004 evolved into a highly competitive event involving hundreds of votes and nearly fifty nominees, featuring a giant display wall and a runway show.

Voting for the nominee was fierce, even leading to a three-way tie, in one slot. These Selectees will be featured over the course of the next couple weeks in New World Notes -- keep watching that space for an exclusive look at some of Second Life’s amazing fashion talent.

Residents continue building (literally!) support for their candidates
As the race to elect the next US President gets ever hotter, so does the campaigning within Second Life itself. The debate can be seen in billboards and posters for and against the major candidates, and in-world conversations on the subject, even in the most unlikely places.

"I guess it is a popular topic all over," says resident Barbarra Blair, whose seen debates over the election pop up in her drum circle group, and in meetings of the Thinkers, who usually discuss philosophy and religion.

Ms. Blair ended up bringing the actual debate into the world itself, streaming a radio broadcast of the third meeting between President Bush and Senator Kerry onto her land, inviting residents of all political persuasions to listen in, and offer their own running commentary.

New World Notes’ Hamlet Linden has the scoop on what might be Second Life’s evolution into a new platform for political expression.
