Q.Is there any health risk associated with the practice of sharing a common cup?

A.The National Conference of Catholic Bishops has consistently been in contact with the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta, and they have confirmed that there is no known case of any specific episode or outbreak of illness associated with the use of a common communion cup, and the risk of transmission is "exceedingly low." The restoration of the fuller sign of holy communion under both forms outweighs the slight risk posed by drinking from the same communion cup.
