Q.What is the difference between "mixed marriage" and "disparity of worship?"

A.The Church refers to a marriage between a baptized Catholic and a baptized member of another church as a "mixed marriage." A parish priest may grant the permission for a mixed marriage provided he has obtained documentary proof of the valid Christian baptism of the non-Catholic.

"Disparity of worship" refers to a marriage between a baptized Catholic and a non-baptized person. A dispensation is required for validity and must be obtained from the Chancery office prior to the wedding. When there is some indication that a non-Catholic person may have been baptized but there is no proof of baptism or there is doubt about its validity, a "disparity of worship ad cautelam" dispensation is requested from the Chancery office prior to the wedding.
