Where do Japanese Game Characters Come From?by Kuri Filed under: Mother Japan + Gamer Fashion on April 8th |
Right from the streets of Tokyo! No, there aren’t some amazingly talented video-game wardrobe designers. And if there are, you can bet your favorite Yu-Gi-Oh! card that all their inspiration comes from youngsters in the streets. Just take a look at that dude in the picture. He looks awesome! Try wearing that get-up in your neighborhood!! Head over to Tokyo Street Style for more samples. I wish I could walk around with those clothes and not be labeled a weirdo. (;_;)
Hardcore Castlevania Lover?by Kuri Filed under: Classics on April 8th |
This is one of the best games/series ever created. I should also mention that the box art for the original is one of the coolest ever. How much would you pay for a factory-sealed U.S. Castlevania? At the time of this writing, there is one on eBay going for $355 dollars. You have until April 11th if you want a shot at it. Here’s a little trivia, the original Japanese Castlevania is actually called 悪魔城ドラキュラ, which is more like Demon-castle Dracula.
Not Just p0rn, Games Too!by Kuri Filed under: Mother Japan on April 8th |
Hah! Those of you who argue that the PSP is not a good porn device, hear this. At h.m.p. you can find classics that serve the purpose of both discreetly feeding your endless apetite for porn and gaming. We all remember this one, the naked model comes out of the hole and you whack her with a little hammer. Whack as many as you can to win! Don’t remember having to shoot anything, that must be something new.

Game-Based Movies: WHY!? (T_T)by Kuri Filed under: Classics + Angry Robots on April 7th |
Where do I start… I don’t know if I’m proud or ashamed to own this. Okay so I am one of those people who collects movie stubs. Glad thats outta the way. Moving right along, I obtained the card imaged above on December 23, 1994 I believe. Opening day for Jean-Claude van Damme’s Street Fighter. My favorite video-game ever. Oh Lord! What did we do to deserve this!? Has there been a worse game-to-movie conversion than this?

How we defended games in the 80’sby Niero Filed under: Classics on April 7th |
Things were different in the old days. People didn’t have more than 1 console (The atari didn’t seem to count, it was like this “other” thing). And there was none of this HD resolution, polygon crap. In fact, we knew about 3-4 buzz words but it wasn’t clear what they really meant. Color depth seems like such a trivial arguement now, but back then, how your peers chose to enjoy 16-bit said everything about your clique. It was also a time when our clothes were tighter. We were studying the works of Michaelangelo. And our vocabulary was forever changed, especially when pressed to defend our video games. I remember some kid yelled this out on the bus:
“The Sega is way more radical because the pixels are rounder”
Please humor us and add your own, and feel free to use Bro when referring to others.
The famous moments of every Final Fantasyby Niero Filed under: Classics + Listmania! on April 7th |
FF Compendium has compiled screenshots of the most recognized moments in the Final Fantasy series. It’s amazing to think this franchise is pushing 20 years old now. This trip down memory lane is filled with silly moments, funny quotes (”Spoony Bard!”) and tear-jerking sequences like the one that weakened knees all around the word, Aeris’s death. To this day still I get all worked up just looking at this screenshot. Notably, this site thinks nothing interesting happens in Final Fantasy online. No comment

Japanese gamers: Sony will smoke the 360by Niero Filed under: Angry Robots on April 7th |
As if the xbox360 needs anyone’s help with smoke, am I right? Ok, ok. I admit I give the 360 a lot of lipservice (Fronz, put the knife DOWN). I think that giant box has the potential to be true next-gen console, but it has a bad rep because Microsoft blew their load way to early in a rush to get something on the shelves early this year. (Instead of Gears of War we got Kameo) This is evident by the lackluster launch titles, the dismal immediate game lineup (1-2 gems excluded), and the (sigh) promise that things will get better soon. I won’t kid myself - Microsoft has a lot of smart people on the payroll. They may be holding a big wad to counter the PS3 launch. Clearly, Japanese gamers don’t seem to think so, and frankly my dears, don’t give a damn. Source: BusinessWeek
Test your Atari Knowledgeby Niero Filed under: Classics on April 7th |
Everyone says they remember their first, but the question is - how well? Think you know your old school? DO YOU STILL USE THE WORD “RAD”?!!! Zipperfish created a retro Atari quiz that shows you screenshots of classic games and box art, and you have to guess the name of the game. There are three rounds of difficulty, and after you answer each question they give you a little classic trivia. Pictured is one of our favorite games of all time. Name withheld, no freebie for you!
