46. The Prodigy's 'Firestarter' video

And they seemed such nice boys. One day the Prodigy are a bunch of Braintree comedy rave kids knocking out dance versions of '80s adverts, the next a previously ignored dancer by the name of Keith has cut off his wonderful, flowing blond locks and become... well, something that viewers of 'Top Of The Pops' aren't quite expecting.

Wisely choosing to stay at home instead of performing their Number One 'Firestarter' in the 'TOTP' studio, the Prodigy have given the show no choice but to screen the most confrontational pop promo in recent memory. And for all the crying children, jammed BBC switchboards and moral outrage, there is no sex, violence or drug abuse in the 'Firestarter' vid. (At this point, nobody is even aware that 'Smack My Bitch Up' is on the horizon, which may be for the best.) It's just Keith Flint, two prongs of hair gelled to within an inch of their lives into devilish spikes and eye make-up that makes Dusty Springfield look like Mother Teresa, jumping up and down in a tunnel. But it's fucking scary. Simple. International fame ensues, culminating with 'The Fat Of The Land' hitting Number One in the States. Liam Howlett celebrates this achievement by "having a wank".

Later in the year, Boyzone's Ronan Keating dresses up as Keith for a pop mag photo shoot; years later bizarre Welsh ex-choirboy Aled Jones is seen recreating the video for a "Spot The Star" slot on a BBC TV pop quiz. The 'Firestarter' vid has been absorbed into pop culture in the same way that punk had been, but its impact is unforgettable.
