61. The Stones' Jagger and Richards are arrested

The events of the night of February 12, 1967, when Mick Jagger and Keith Richards were busted at Keef's Redlands mansion for possession of hash and "pep pills", have passed into legend - and myth. It is pure invention, for instance, that the police busted down the door to find Jagger on a sofa, head between girlfriend Marianne Faithfull's legs, nibbling on a Mars Bar inserted in her person.

Nonsense, says Marianne. Bollocks, agrees Keef.

When they came to trial, Jagger was sentenced to three months in jail and Richards to a year. However, even the Establishment saw that the Stones were being scapegoated. Times editor William Rees-Mogg wrote a famous editorial, 'Who Would Break A Butterfly On A Wheel?', to this effect. The courts were shamed and the Stones acquitted, though they continued to add to their criminal records, not least with their solo albums.
