The House in its Environment
Nelson House is the premier Door County experience. Constructed of indigenous stone, cedar, oak and Douglas fir, it is the finest representation of Greene&Greene-style Arts&Crafts architecture in the county and perhaps in all of northern Wisconsin. Master carpenters, stone masons, cabinet makers, tilers and other skilled craftsmen labored for over a year to complete the house. Located on nearly two acres of wooded land, it boasts one hundred feet of frontage onto a twenty-five mile sand beach on Lake Michigan. Sail boats, kayaks, canoes and rowboats can be launched right from our shore. Waters are calm here, because they are shielded by a natural cove, and the waters are shallow six hundred feet from the shore, making them ideal for swimming and wading. The beach also has a natural wetland, inhabited by ducks, geese,  frogs and other aquatic life. Begin your day with an unobstructed view of the sunrise, followed by fishing or swimming or a hike up the quiet beach. Visit the Ridges Sanctuary, Cana Island lighthouse, or  Whitefish Dunes State Park, or golf at Maxwelton Braes championship course, or ride at the Kurtz stables all within twenty minutes drive from your lodging. End your day with reflections in front of a fire in one of the four stone fireplaces of this magnificent house.[Click here for

The House [Take a pictoral tour of Nelson House]
Nelson House consists of 4,000 square feet of fine workmanship. From the moment you grasp the heavy bronze handle and lift the latch on the three inch thick custom oak door, you enter another world. The floors are oak and ceramic tile, the Great Room soars to twenty-eight foot high cathedral ceilings, to view the lush environs to the fullest. But then the ceiling descends to an eight-foot heavily beamed area around the wood-burning stone fireplace. The wall of glass in the Great Room is framed by five Douglas fir weight-bearing vertical columns, the largest being twenty-five feet long. On each end of the glass wall are englenooks, hideaways for reading and meditation. Off the great room is the Library, with built-in book sheves entertainment center and controls for the whole-house speaker system. The Master Suite is accessible from the Great Room, the Library or through private entrances from outside. The Master Suite contains a stone wood-burning fireplace, a king sleigh bed, a whirlpool bath and steam shower, a kitchenette with wet bar, and a sitting room, which can be made into another bedroom if desired. The second floor contains a spacious loft with pool table and wood-burning fireplace, a full bath, a walk-in cedar closet and four bedrooms: the Southwest room, decorated with Native American artifacts from the southwest region of the United States; the Yellow Room, with its four-poster queen bed; the Pine Room, constructed with pine boards from a hundred-year-old cottage also on the property; and the Nautical Room, decorated in a nautical theme. The Southwest, Yellow and Nautical rooms all have French doors opening to balconies. There is a third full bath off the kitchen, containing a walk-in ceramic tile shower.. Utilities include: two furnaces with an Aprilaire humidifying system and two central air conditioning units to provide zoned control; washer, dryer, dishwaher, disposal, and a revervse-osmosis water filtration system.
