Sharon [Msft] (Expert):
Hi Sharon here, Program Manager for ActiveX, ActiveX Opt-In and Parental Controls.

PeterG [MSFT] (Expert):
Hey there. I’m Peter Gurevich, the program manager for ClearType and Page Zoom. I am also the performance PM.

Anurag [MSFT] (Expert):
Hello, I am a Program Manager on the IE team. Glad to be here and looking forward to this chat.

Jason [MSFT] (Expert):
Hi, I'm Jason, a Program Manager on the IE team.

Hello all, my name is Max Stevens and I'm a PM on the IE team working on the user experience and user interface.

Jesse Mohrland[MSFT] (Expert):
I'm Jesse the Test Lead for Internet Explorer Setup

Start of chat:

Jason [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Will there be any surprise feature that you won't be showing us in beta's ?
A: Well then it wouldn't be a surprise, would it? ;) Just kidding - sorry, no surprise features that won't be in the betas.

Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Will IE7 interface be made more customizable ?
A: We're still working on the user experience in general. What kind of customizations are you expecting/looking for? We're always looking for that kind of feedback.

PeterG [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Why one IE7 window uses ~100mb of ram with tabs turned on and 30mb without?
A: We are looking into several performace issue at this time. We appreciate your feedback and would love to help analyse the issue. Can you provide more details and perhaps a repro. Please send more details to the IETell@microsoft.com

PeterG [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: A request, please make Ctrl + Scroll change the font size and not Page Zoom.
A: Thanks for the feedback on Page zoom. We will do our best to address our customer requests and feedback in the final version of the product.

Dave Massy [MSFT] (Moderator):
Q: ok here it is simple put up , Will IE7 have something like content blocker of opera or adlock extention of firefox?
A: Hi alsladka, As with other browsers this type of functionality is available as an IE extension. As part of the work on IE7 you can expect us to be improving the discoverability of extensions to IE.

Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: Will max/min-height/width will be implemented in final release of IE7?
A: We knew that min/max-width/height would be even more important with the overflow changes. We're working hard to get it in to IE7, but we can't promise support for it just yet.

Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: I cleared "Always switch to new tabs" and selected "Always open pop-ups in new tab". Why on the Earth IE7 switches focus for newly opened pop-ups?
A: Given the two options you selected, we will switch focus for popups. You might try blocking popups, or perhaps choosing the option to let IE decide whether to allow the popup or not, as that may result in only popups that you're actually interested in seeing. I take it you would rather that popups are the exception to the "always switch to new tabs" rule?

Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: Could you build in a google ad blocker? ;)
A: We can't really block just one particular set of ads, no.

Jesse Mohrland[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Why is “Install On Demand” checked by default? Could their be security problem by leaving it on?
A: The Install On Demand feature has been all but removed from IE. We still support language pack installation in this fashion.

Jason [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: I'd like to know if there is a way to turn off the following. Sometimes, when my mouse cursor is just hovering over a link or selection--it automatically goes to the link/selection without me clicking. I never want to go anywhere unless I click.
A: I haven't heard of this or seen it myself, but I will follow up on this with our navigation team.

Dave Massy [MSFT] (Moderator):
Q: I have some strange blank spaces in my page between divs and tables. It is shown right with Firefox and IE6 and Opera, but with IE7 it is not. You can see them here http://www.lnk.lt under the images near the dashed border.
A: Hi, Take a look at an article at http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/IETechCol/cols/dnexpie/ie7_css_compat.asp that discusses some changes that might effect page rendering.

Jeremy [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Sometimes "Tools" button disappear from the IE7 toolbar. Is this known issue?
A: We have heard some similar reports of this issue and are actively investigating the issue.

Sharon [Msft] (Expert):
Q: Will there be any chance that I will be able to have more control of the add-ons that are install and what sites they can be used on. Example: I would like to disable flash on all website except: www.microsoft.com which would be my choice, similar to the
A: Hey Joe - we have thought about giving more site and domain specific control of add-ons but unfortunately we that will not be added for IE7.

PeterG [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Why not make Cleartype conform to systemwide settings ?
A: Thanks for the feedback on ClearType. We think that it is a mistake that we did not turn cleartpye on by default in XP. We want a way for our users to turn off ClearTpe in IE without having to use CLearType on the whole system.

Jesse Mohrland[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Will there be arrows “left and right” to navigate through the tabs. It appears when I have several tabs open, some of the tabs are not shown and I don’t realize there are more tabs. (I know you can use the arrow next to quick tabs to show all the tabs)
A: You can use CTRL+TAB to cycle through the tabs. I am unaware of a UI feature to implement what you are asking specifcally.

Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: On the username + password box for sites requiring login you have a "Remember my username and password" box but no auto-login. Why, particularly when I have to login for a homepage does it not auto-login?

Dave Massy [MSFT] (Moderator):
Q: Is IE team aware of favicon bug in pages on HTTPS connection and will it be corrected in beta2? It doesn't display. Here is an example https://mail.lnk.lt/horde/
A: Yes. That is something we are aware of. Thanks Vilius. I can't guarantee it will be addressed in beta 2 but we certainly want to address as many issues as we can.

Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Is the search bar redirecting the in-focus tab expected behaviour for the final release? It is annoying having to open up a new tab each time you want to search and THEN typing it in the box, I might have well visit the search site.
A: Yes, this is expected behavior. If you want to open search results in a new tab, try hitting Alt+enter after typing your search terms, instead of just enter

Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: On the username + password box for sites requiring login you have a "Remember my username and password" box but no auto-login. Why, particularly when I have to login for a homepage does it not auto-login?
A: Sites can set up an auto-login themselves by using cookies. We don't want to force an auto-login, because you might want to log in with different credentials.

Sharon [Msft] (Expert):
Q: Sometime when I visit a website, and I have flash disabled I have a big box with an X and I can not click on any of the links underneath this. Will I be able to hide this?
A: No, we haven't changed this scenario but this is good feedback that we can consider for later.

Travis Leithead (Expert):
Q: Will there be more improvements with the favorites? Example: 1-Will I be able to search my favorites’ live; as I type find favorites match my criteria. 2-Will I be able to find favorites that do not work anymore giving 404 errors?
A: Thank you for your feature request. We are always open to consider new options, and this sounds like an excellent feature request. We can consider both of your requests for future versions of IE.

Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Sometimes "Tools" button disappear from the IE7 toolbar. Is this known issue?
A: Disappear in terms of it falls into the menu overflow? Or disappear altogether? If you could give me some more details, that would help.

Jeremy [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: I also have this "focus stealing" problem. If IE7 window is in a background and I'm working in Word (or whatever other application), and IE window refreshes it steals a focus. Example: open this link https://mail.lnk.lt/ie7.html open word and wait 30 seconds
A: Thanks Vilius - We have a bug filed against this issue and a fix in investigation.

Markus [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: will IE7 final support CSS2 generated content?
A: Sadly no. We concentrated in IE7 in fixing several CSS issues and add support for fixed positioning, selectors etc. A good summary is here: http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2006/02/02/523679.aspx

Linda [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: What is the view ploblem with the Microsoft Partner site? Only the top part of the page is showing Https://partners.microsoft.com/partnerprogram/
A: Hi…it is a known issue that we are looking into it

Anurag [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: We know that IE7 will be available for other O/S's can you give us an approximate date from 2003 Servers?
A: Hi Stephen: Our goal is to provide a beta build for 2003 server SP1 by the beta2 timeframe, however, no promises yet. :)

Dave Massy [MSFT] (Moderator):
Q: Will IE7 be supporting Element Behaviors, and will there be any additional interfaces with the newer layout engine?
A: Yes Element Behaviors continue to be supported as a way to extend the rendering. See the blog post at http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2006/02/02/523679.aspx for the changes which will be accompanied with associated interface changes that we are currently working on documenting.

Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Max: I CLEARED "Always switch to new tabs" ...
A: Thanks, we'll treat this as a bug and try to reproduce it internally.

Linda [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: What is the view ploblem with the Microsoft Partner site? Only the top part of the page is showing Https://partners.microsoft.com/partnerprogram/
A: Hi, hope u get my reply that it is a known issue we are looking into it at the moment

Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: how often becomes the IE fishing blacklist updates?
A: The Anti-Phishing filter is a live back-end service. It is continually updated; that's why we have to send URLs up to the service, so the "black list" can be as up to date as possible.

PeterG [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: PeterG: Why not use the ClearType settings of the system? The many users of CRT monitors won't like it when IE7 automatically turns on ClearType. You should at least ask people by offering a ClearType preview in the Setup wizard.
A: Thanks for the feedback on Cleartype. We are evaluating the possibility of incorporating Cleartype into the IE first run experience

Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Max, Tools button disappears, then appears again after navigating somewhere.
A: Does it disappear into the overflow? In other words, if you select the little arrow at the right of hte toolbar to see the menu, do you see tools there?

Jason [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Any plans to integrate Live Favorites directly into the Favorites center?
A: This likely won't happen in the IE 7.0 timeframe. We are investigating this for a future version.

Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: Is there any known issues with forms and IE 7 beta?
A: Not that I'm aware of. Do you know of one?

Jesse Mohrland[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: always got the same error!! msfeeds.dll !! +o( :'(
A: If you get the MSFEEDS.DLL error during installation, this is symptom of the installation backing itself out. We have seen this caused by access restrictions on registry keys we write to. We are hoping to come up with a solution to determine which reg key is the culprit. HKCR\.tiff has been one we've seen quite often.

Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: with opera featuring the content blocker which as you know what it can be used for , and firefox aso featuring that option using the adblock extention , Will IE7 include something like that?
A: There are a number of third-party ad-blocking add-ins that can be installed with Internet Explorer.

Dave Massy [MSFT] (Moderator):
Q: In earlier versions of IE, I would connect to a browser only in my current process by looking at the top-level windows (EnumWindows) and then matching the HWND with a shell item (IEFrame) that is an IWebBrowser2 object. IE7 uses the TabWindowClass as.
A: There are some changes in this area with the introduction of tabs. We are workign on documenting them. Let me know if there is something missing.

Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Is an integrated "Download Manager" in the works?
A: Not for IE 7, no. We evaluated early on whether this was required, but decided to spend our development time on other features. We'll consider it again for future releases though.

Jesse Mohrland[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Will there be any x64 CTPs of IE (non-vista)
A: Yes, we are planning to ship an X64 version of IE7 downlevel.

PeterG [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Why did you remove the image toolbar?
A: Thanks for the feedback. We got lots of feedback from customers that they really didnt like that toolbar.

Dave Massy [MSFT] (Moderator):
Q: Because it is impossible to use runas to execute explorer.exe as a different user, using runas on iexplore.exe and then navigating to for instance My Computer was a useful workaround for this with IE6. In IE7, this no longer works. Will this be fixed?
A: Hi Sven, This is a by design change in IE7 and we are not expecting to revert to IE6 behavior.

Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Max, no it's not overflow. It just disappears.
A: Thanks Wasker & Vilius, I'll try to reproduce this internally.

Jeremy [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: The thing that anooys me all the way: focus! Once I click a link in email, the IE window opens -- it's OK, I switch back to email. Then IE downloads the whole page and switches focus on its window. This is really annoying behaviour. Will this be fixed?
A: wasker: I believe this is by design behavior in this scenario.

Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: Is the IE team worried that firefox share is increasing exponentially while IE can't revise and ship new versions because they are bogged down with OS dependencies?
A: No.

Travis Leithead (Expert):
Q: Are we going to see interactive search such as seen in emacs and Firefox in IE7?A: An improvement to our "find" feature was the hardest feature to cut for IE7 due to resources. However, I think we all want to see a better search capability in a future version :)

Jesse Mohrland[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Will there be any x64 CTPs of IE (non-vista)
A: We are aiming to ship a pre-release x64 build at a later date.

Dave Massy [MSFT] (Moderator):
Q: question: we have observed that IE7 will post again by itself, when the webserver it is hitting takes longer than 30 seconds to respond - has this been reported and when will this bug be fixed ? please advise thank you
A: This is a known issue in the preview of beta 2 that is being addressed.

Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: Why have U join the OpenSearch project created by A9 - ?
A: We wanted an open, standard way to define search engines and search results, so web sites can define themselves as a search service.

Anurag [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: I'd like to see a public bug triage system similar to bugzilla... wouldn't this help you weed out duplicate feedback?
A: We are working on implementing a similar system. Thanks for the great feedback.

Markus [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Good morning! I'd like to know how far you've come in realising CSS2 compatibility. I've seen in the Blog that it seems to be a pretty big priority for you guys. Could you also please elaborate on the 'strict mode in IE6' that I noticed mentioned in Blog.
A: We are working hard on moving our CSS compliance forward. We added several CSS features and fixed inconsistencies. With any changes we introduce, even in the name of standards, we have to be aware of application compatability. For that reason IE6 introduced a <!Doctype> switch that allows IE to toggle between a backwards compatibility mode (quirks) and a compliant mode (strict). In strict we will change behavior to adhere to the standards. This might effect your sites so please test your pages using the public build of IE7 if your page is authored under a X/HTML strict doctype.

Jeremy [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Any plans to offer a supported standalone version of IE? It's really difficult for developers to test against IE6 and IE7, and all other modern browsers (including IE6) worked in .local mode until December 2005.
A: There are currently no plans for a standalone version of IE.

Jason [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: will there be an option for me to turn off the color-shading of the address bar? i know which sites i trust and which ones i don't.
A: We are not planning on changing this for IE 7.0. Unfortunately, there are many people out there that don't know which sites they can trust.

PeterG [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: PeterG: I remember a chat with Brian Valentine where he said that it was the right decision not to enable ClearType by default in WinXP. Why would you change that now? Millions of people still have low-quality CRT monitors.
A: Thanks for the feedback on ClearType. We have more data now that shows that Cleartype enhances the reading experience even on CRTs. Plus now that LCDs have more market penetration, we well it is the right time to bring this great technology to our customers

Jesse Mohrland[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: ok... my question is...only in this pc i cant install ie7 'cause MSFEEDS.dll got error!A: See previous post.

Linda [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Will there be any improvement with “Find On This Page”. I would like “Find On This Page” to act similar to FF 1.5 or Adobe Acrobat. Find all items on the page and highlight them also similar to MSN Desktop Search toolbar.
A: It was a great thing we worked on but had to cut it off due to the time schedule we had. Will consider it in the future release.

Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: Hello, are you going to create future version of IE for WPF and when we could expect the first preview?
A: WPF applications can be hosted within IE, and I do expect at some point in the future we will leverage the power of the WPF in the IE browser; but this won't be a totally separate IE application.

Jeremy [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: @Q23: I would strongly request this be rethought, there's nothing more frustrating than trying to open a few links and having IE steal the focus between each one, it causes frustration and wasted time constantly switching between the browser and the client.
A: William, thank you for your feedback. I will pass on your concern to the appropriate people. Feel free to also provide feedback to ietell@microsoft.com

Dave Massy [MSFT] (Moderator):
Q: Is IE7 going to have better debug/tampering tools like Firefox? Those help a LOT with debugging! Or is the IE team going to rely on 3rd parties to ship those?
A: We've just released beta 2 of the developer toolbar at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=e59c3964-672d-4511-bb3e-2d5e1db91038&displaylang=en that is a great help along with Fiddler www.fiddlertool.com for developers to diagnose issues with web pages.

Anurag [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: What functional changes if any will we see to Windows explorer by upgrading to IE 7
A: You should not be able to see any changes to Windows Explorer by installing IE7. Is there somethign specifically that you are looking for or something that annoys you?

Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: Are you working on a more elaborate Javascript debugger, or at least fixing some of the issues with the current debugger?
A: We have heard the feedback about our debugging experience, and we will address it in the future.

Markus [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Although you have said support for XHTML will not be added to IE7, will you implement some mitigations to problems that currently exist, such as using CDATA sections inside script or style tags which currently don't work in IE6.
A: We fixed that the XHTML ?XML prolog will not force IE into quirksmode any more. XHTML doctype will now be treated as strict.

Jesse Mohrland[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: i've heard you (ms) say many times you won't make a stand-alone. while i think your reasons are horrible (sorry), i still believe there's a need to be able to see how both ie6 and ie7 *render* withou having to switch computers. could you do this at least?
A: There are no plans to officially support a side-by-side installation.

PeterG [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Did image toolbar disappear from IE7?
A: Yes, we got significant feedback that people didnt like the toolbar.

Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: Will IE7 have something like content blocker of opera or adlock extention of firefox?
A: There are already third-party ad-blocking extensions for IE.

Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: The IE perhaps finally also will the RSS feeds support?
A: Yes, we offer RSS feeds support today! In the beta 2 preview installatoin, simply click on the favorites center to the left of the tabs area and select the Feeds button to see your subscribed feeds.

Dave Massy [MSFT] (Moderator):
Q: Will IE7 adhere to the "Do not let applications steal focus" setting in Tweak UI like IE 6 did and all other Windows applications do?
A: We're aware of some focus issues with the preview of beta 2 of IE7 and hope to address these in the final release

PeterG [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: PeterG: maybe an option for this toolbar?
A: Good suggestions. Well take it under consideration and see what we can do. Thanks. :-)

Markus [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Do you plan to implement support for several CSS2 properties such as min height/width, and the :before and :after declarations?
A: we are working on min/max height and width at the moment. there are no plans for :before and :after in IE7

Sharon [Msft] (Expert):
Q: What existing/already-installed ActiveX controls will NOT be disabled by IE 7? Any?
A: There will be some native IE controls and a few other very popular controls which will not be disabled. The final list of controls which will not be disabled is still under consideration. We will be posting on the blog after we determine the final criteria for the list.

Jeremy [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: IE has a "double focus" problem. If you click a link, switch to another task IE will grab focus a second time when the page has completed loading.
A: Manip - We are working on a number of focus-related issues within IE7. Please feel free to pass on your feedback to the feedback alias at ietell@microsoft.com

Jason [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Ok, thanks

Anurag [MSFT] (Expert):
Subscribe to the IE Team Blog to get regular updates about IE7 and what the team is doing in general. Check out http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/

PeterG [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Will the zoom widget be changed to conform to Office 12 standard ?
A: Thanks for the feedback on Page zoom. We have gotten similar feedback and are evaluating what changes we can make between now and Ship.

Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: 8-) Any plans to make your point as a definitive display engine by passing the Acid2 test?
A: The Acid 2 test is not a goal for IE7, as I've detailed on our blog - http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2005/07/29/445242.aspx -we have focused on eliminating the biggest problems webdevs face with our engine, and adding the most-requested features.

Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Do you know that Google toolbar 4 doesn't work properly in IE7? It always disappears.
A: Yes, we're aware that with the most recent beta released by google, there are issues with IE7. Thanks.

Dave Massy [MSFT] (Moderator):
Q: Could one build an Download accelerator into the final version perhaps also?
A: There are interfaces available in IE see http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/workshop/browser/ext/overview/downloadmgr.asp

Travis Leithead (Expert):
Q: Please add the option to open new tab on Ctrl-N too. If I already chosen to use tabs, why should I always remember which key combination to press?
A: Unfortunately, Ctrl+N has been historically used for opening new windows in all sort of apps, and we'd hate to confuse our users that continue to depend on the "open a new window" behavior. :) Maybe a better potential feature would be customizable keyboard shortcuts--which are not currently planned.

Sharon [Msft] (Expert):
Q: We are developers of an IE toolbar. However, after installing IE7 beta 2 preview, the toolbar is no longer visible by default (even if the user had enabled it before in IE6). Why is that? Will IE7 Final automatically show third-party toolbars again?
A: not sure exactly what would be going on with your toolbar. If not then check that any activeX controls which your toolbar installs are not being disabled by ActiveX Opt-In.

Jesse Mohrland[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: quick question, do i need to change something in my group policy to prevent changing the home page?
A: You can disable the changing of the home page through group policy.

Anurag [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Will FTP sites be viewed in IE or will it only be available in Explorer?
A: Yes, they should be viewable in IE7 on XPSP2.

Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: Will there be any features form IE 6 that can be downgraded to IE6 Like for instance the rendering engine ?
A: No, we are not designing IE7 to allow you to pick-and-choose specific components from previous versions.

Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: In IE7, the tabs are stuck in the order in which they are created. Can you provide functionality to rearrange tabs, like how Visual Studio 2005 does it?
A: Thanks for the feedback. We will consider adding this functionality.

Linda [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: why default link colors are lighter than in IE4/5/6?
A: It is made more consistent across the OS platform.

Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: Perhaps will it give tools for the adaptation of the IE?
A: I'm afraid I don't understand your question.

Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: In reply to the answer you gave me , Dont you people think that integrating features like content blocked shall pep up the userbase , otherwise i daresay those who migrated to firefox and opera wont return!!!!
A: We must be careful about removing content that the web site authors have specified on their pages, or we might be sued for altering their content.

Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: IE TEAM FOLK: thanks for such great RSS support.. Now if we just see this integrated more with windows media player so I can subscribe to RSS pocasts.. Is this possible in the future?
A: Thanks for the feedback. We're definitely putting a lot of effort into our RSS platform as well as our feature area. We'll consider this idea for future releases.

Jeremy [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: is there good documentation for creating plug-ins and controls for 64 bit IE 7?? Can anyone point me to this?
A: DonnyEMU: At this time, there is currently no documentation for 64-bit plugins. We will take your feedback to the team. Feel free to also submit your feedback via ietell@microsoft.com.

Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: Hello, I recently purchased the ATI Wonder HDTV Tuner card and run Windows MCE 2005. I cannot get the MCE to recognize the tuner card. When I called ATI for support the Tech said the card is not compatible with MCE. Do I have to buy a different card?

Jesse Mohrland[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: How to add manually search providers ? Is there a registry tweak ?
A: See recent blog post http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2006/02/07/527266.aspx

Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: Generalized :hover is great. Was that a pain to implement?
A: It was a bit of a challenge to get all the updating correct in a performant way, yes. We've got some great developers, though. :)

Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Please add the function to be able to open a folder of tabs which rest within the "Links" toolbar.
A: Thanks for the feedback. We will consider this.

Sharon [Msft] (Expert):
Q: when we try to do windows update, it tells us that we need to install the active x contols - but on the top i dont get the information bar where i could right click and say install.. how to trouble shoot such kind of issue
A: You should make sure your security settings are at default level. Also, as a sanity check look in the source of the page and make sure there is actually an object tag in the page somewhere. If you find an object tag, make sure you don't have the control installed already. I don't recall any issues with WU but can look into it.

Travis Leithead (Expert):
Q: Will the space near status bar be ever used? Avant for instance allows to place there toolbars...
A: Some of our users have come to see the status bar as a source for security (verifying the source of links, etc.), and so for security reasons, we haven't wanted to allow anything else to be docked there. We are trying to persuade users to avoid the status bar for verification, and use the address bar instead (hence its prominent and fixed position at the top of the window). Eventually, we may be open to new options in the status bar area...

Jason [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: its only 1 question!! :( i cant install ie7b2 in this pc with SP2 ....always (msfeeds.dll) error!
A: Check out the answer to question #7 on this blog post: http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2006/01/31/521344.aspx

Markus [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: can you say to what extent will your layout behaviour be fixed or will the basic hasLayout behaviour remain the same. It's already causing new issues for CSS layouts
A: We fixed several issues around relative positioning. Has layout is still used as an internal data structure. If you encounter a page that does not work as expected you can try zoom 100% to force Layout (height 1% will not work anymore since we fixed our overflow behavior). We hope we fixed the majority of pain points so HasLayout does not have to be used that often anymore.

PeterG [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: PeterG: Will the new ClearType settings affect the WebBrowser control also? If users turn off ClearType in the IE options, will that setting also be applied to all WebBrowser control instances?
A: ClearType will be turned on for anything that uses MSHTML.dll. If you turn it off in IE it should be off everywhere else that uses MSHTML.dll

Dave Massy [MSFT] (Moderator):
Q: Do you plan to have some kind of support for a Download Manager? If one was to brose through the Dialogs in ieframe.dll, they would find dialogs for file transfer prioritisation, etc... Perhaps you can elaborate on this.. :)
A: For IE7 we did nto get to the download manager funcitonality although we did want to. There are interfaces available in IE for 3rd parties to use to provide a better download experience at http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/workshop/browser/ext/overview/downloadmgr.asp

PeterG [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: PeterG: An option for image toolbar. Is it possible? Default could be off...
A: Thanks for the feedback, we will look into it.

Jason [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Can or will IE7 remember when I select “Show Unread” in the feeds, that the next time I load that feed it will always show the unread feed. (Remembering the last setting chosen)
A: Once you navigate to the feed, all items are considered "Read"

Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Will the RSS feeds subscribed to in IE be accessible in Windows Explorer as well?
A: The platform will provide access to the feed data to whomever wants to hook into it, meaning writing a custom application for the shell to display RSS data will be much easier then if you had to write it from scratch.

Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: Google adsense ads, seem to be wreaking havoc on a friend's blog when accessing it with IE7 b2, whereas it had no problems in B1, and this seems to be code included from google's site.. Do they know their ad code has issues?
A: If your security settings are set to medium-high, you may have an issue seeing Google AdSense ads. The default settings for IE still allow these ads.

Sharon [Msft] (Expert):
Q: You guys have done a wonderful job of supporting the most third-party toolbars, add-ons etc. out of the box in IE7 beta 2! Thanks a lot for that! (We're an add-on developer)
A: cool! thanks for the feedback

Dave Massy [MSFT] (Moderator):
Q: Can you please publish some documentation of all the new window.external objects that you are implementing with IE7?
A: We plan on documenting all the new functionality and hope to have it in place for the second beta.

Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: if you are ditching "has layout" (or at least trying to), what do you recommend for clearing floats if you don't support :after?
A: We still have layout, and 'clear' still works.

Anurag [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Is checking-for-new-RSS content a service or part of IE?
A: Check out the RSS team blog http://blogs.msdn.com/rssteam/ for up-to-date information on RSS efforts within IE.

Travis Leithead (Expert):
Q: Will it be possible to drag content between tabs (currently their is no way to switch tab while dragging, I feel it should behave like the taskbar, so open the tab when hovering over it while dragging)?
A: While this is currently not possible, it is also something that we would like to have happen in a future version of our browser. We appreciate your feature suggestions, keep them coming...

Markus [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: i notice microsoft people referring to a page that lists css changes, but this isn't really as good a page as you seem to think. where can we find a complete list of all the css you think you're supporting, so we can test it?
A: this is an excellent question. We work with the W3C to establish a CSS2.1 test suit to answer exactly that question (+ the same for other browsers)

Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: Is there any progress on being able to pass the Acid2 test similar to Safari and Konqueror or is that not a priority for Microsoft at this time?
A: As blogged in July (http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2005/07/29/445242.aspx), not a priority for IE7 - we're focused on the biggest problems webdevs run in to with IE, and the most-requested features.

Linda [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: will it be possible now to save complete web pages that include @import css files and the images linked from these css files? in other words, actually save the *COMPLETE* web page and not just the html parts.
A: One workaround is to copy the path of CSS and pasted in the address bar, i.e. use http:// the css file path to view the css file source.

Jason [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Will it be possible to re-order tabs like in Visual Studio 200x?
A: We have received a lot of feedback on this and are currently looking into it.

Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: how do you get additional tabs to stay on the tab bar after adding them
A: Can you ask the questoin again with a little more detail about what you're trying to get at? Are you trying to get more tabs to appear before the tab overflow kicks in?

Jesse Mohrland[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Is it possible to have an Internet Explorer "Lite" instance open? In otherwords, basic browser features, without all the extras features? Features are great, but sometimes we need to minimize the footprint.
A: You can disable many of the features throught the INETCPL or through group policy.

Dave Massy [MSFT] (Moderator):
Q: IE7 uses the TabWindowClass as the shell item and it is not a top-level window. I am now having a hard time finding a way to determine that is in my current process.
A: Hi bubba, We're hoping to get documentation up on the changes soon. Thanks for the feedback I'll make sure we address that question in the documentation

Jeremy [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Will you add "Save As" to the favourites and history right click?
A: Manip: There are currently no plans on implementing rightclick/saveas to the favorites & history in IE7. Feel free to provide your feedback to ietell@microsoft.com

Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: Will the rss feeds be improved to work with more than text based feeds, ie. Podcast catching etc?
A: The RSS platform by design handles all different kinds of data - video, audio, images, text, etc. Many different experiences can be built on top of the platform or connected to it, including podcasts.

PeterG [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: With the latest MS aquisition is there plans to add JPEG2000 support?
A: At this time we have no plans for providing default support for JPEG200 in the OS or in IE

Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Question, do you guys think that adding the function of being able to middle click or right click on a "folder" wthat is placed on the "Links" toolbar can be implemented before the final release?
A: Thanks for the feedback, we'll consider adding this functionality.

Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: In the final version by the IE 7 java will be integrated? it would make me happy. Or at least refers for installation to the Java web page!!
A: See results of Sun lawsuit. :(

Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Clicking in the search boix doesn't select the whole text by default (like it does with the MSN Search Toolbar). I *demand* it to be fixed :)
A: Thanks for the feedback. We've run into it internally and all find it annoying too :). We'll definitely consider fixing this

Dave Massy [MSFT] (Moderator):
Q: Why no plans to develop the Download Manager? Why let the other browsers steal the show by being a complete suite of technology and leaving IE behind?
A: It's something we really wanted to do for IE7 but we have to concentrate our efforts in other areas. There are 3rd party download managers avaialble and we hope to address this in a future release

Travis Leithead (Expert):
Q: When will we see CTRL-A (select all) in the address bar and or search box?
A: I'm not sure that we will support this now. However, Ctrl+D will place focus in the address bar and select all the text there.

Dave Massy [MSFT] (Moderator):
Q: Other than Binary (element behaviors) will IE7 be providing or introducing a new way to extend your own custom elements?
A: No plans for any changes to this in IE7. Was there something specific you wanted to see?

PeterG [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Does IE 7 provide the engine to decode and display CHM files?
A: CHM files should be viewable in IE7

Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: Can you please publish a roadmap? Many other Microsoft teams have done this, most notably the developer tools team, and I think it's contributed to the success and acceptance of their products.
A: Indeed we can, and I think you will see some of this rolling out in our blog over the next year. Of course, in the web browser space, the roadmap changes frequently. Also, I'd invite people to come to the MIX06 conference (http://www.mix06.com/), where we are explicitly soliciting feedback on the direction of IE.

Sharon [Msft] (Expert):
Q: Can we get an option to disable the annoying clipboard warning box?
A: Not sure exactly which warning box you are talking about but there are two Security options you should take a look at:
- Drag and Drop or Copy and Paste Files (under Misc)
- Allow Programatic clipboard access (under scripting)

Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: When will we see a version of IE 7 Beta for Windows Server 2003?
A: We will release a beta of IE 7 for windows server 2003 sp1 in the first half of this year.

Anurag [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Who is the nerdiest of the IE team ? (of the people present here)
A: Whats your definition of "nerdiest"? ;) *meanwhile we are fighting for bragging rights*

Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Any chance we could get an option to right click on selected text in a web page adn have the selected text added to a search in a new tab?
A: Alas, we do not expect to implement this feature for IE7. We will consider this for future releases though.

Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: Is it reasonable to ask for a developer version of IE, which would be less forgiving of markup errors?
A: You really want good developer tools for markup and content, I think. That is a different set of products - for example, the (free!) Visual Web Developer Express is a great place to start. (http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/vwd/).

Jesse Mohrland[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: What about Ctrl-Tab behave like Alt-Tab or like VS.NET?
A: Ctrl+Tab cycles through the tabs within your active IE window. Alt+Tab cycles through various the Windows on the system.

Linda [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: LindA: any consideration to use default windows theme colors in links?

Sharon [Msft] (Expert):
Q: Sharon: All third-party IE toolbars are hidden after installing IE7 beta 2 preview (MSN toolbar, for example). Users have to re-enable them using Tools - Toolbars. IE7 should automatically migrate the toolbar visibility settings from IE6.
A: Hey DaveCulterFan - sorry about that. We've seen this problem in the past. We'll look into it again.

Linda [MSFT] (Expert):
A: I think IE 7 uses the default window os theme

Anurag [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: thanks for your time so far, are you all fed up yet ;)
A: Not yet. :) We are always glad to answer questions. Thanks for the great feedback!

Linda [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: @linda re: 77. yes, but that's a major big pain. :-/ especially then going through the entire css file and looking for graphics.A: :)

Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: IE/Debug mode would be useful internally to the ASP.NET team too, I would imagine...
A: You can already dig in and look at network traffic with tools like Fiddler (http://www.fiddlertool.com/fiddler/ ).

Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Can someone tell me where the "Find on this Page" tool is now? Could yopu add a new way for searching for text in a webpage similiar to ...er...Firefox?
A: We've heard this feedback many times before, and we're considering our options now. Thanks for the feedback.

Jeremy [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Currently, Feed Discovery is non-functional. Can you share any information on how you plan to get IE to notify users of newly discovered content?
A: Q102: Jack-Can you provide more information around what is "non-functional" WRT Feed Discovery? Have you enabled Schedule Syncing for your feeds (tools/options/content/rss/settings)

Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: Why RSS icon lights up for no reason sometimes? Even when there is no feeds on page.
A: Do you have an example page?

Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: what is the projected release date for the the real beta, and final
A: Beta 2 will be released in the first half of 2006, with the final release in the second half of 2006. That's as specific as we can be at this point. Thanks.

Jesse Mohrland[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: This may have been asked before: Is Microsoft going to deliver any new tools to help administrators "preset" certain functionality in IE7?
A: The full solution for administrators will be Group Policy. We are planning to ship a version of the IEAK for IE but this will not set policy, only prefference.

Dave Massy [MSFT] (Moderator):
Q: Why are you people relying on 3rd party extentions for an publicly used and needed feature like content blocker!! Why not have it in IE?
A: I don't believe other browsers are any different in this regard and extensions are a great way to provide this functionality. For IE7 we have concentrated on security, user experience and platform improvements that have been most requested by our customers.

Anurag [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: You talk of future release. What ball park time frames are you looking at for these?
A: we are targeting first half of CY2006 for beta2 and the second half of CY2006 for final release.

Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: When creating WPF applications for the browser, is there a good listing of what WPF anywhere will be like, so we keep to features that can be supported outside the Windows platform. Are there guidelines anywhere?
A: Not yet. The WPF/Everywhere platform is still being developed. Stay tuned.

PeterG [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: What programming language was IE7 written in? .net, C#
A: C++

Sharon [Msft] (Expert):
Q: I know that IE 7 on Vista has like a sandbox feature, will you include something similar for XP/Server 2003?
A: No, sorry we don't have plans to provide Protected mode on XP or server.

Jason [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Can you address privacy concerns of the anti-phishing feature?
A: Please see this post on our team blog: http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2005/08/31/458663.aspx

Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: is there aw way to keep the ctrl-q look when switching between IE and different applications
A: Can you be a little more specific about what you mean by the "ctrl-q" look?

Dave Massy [MSFT] (Moderator):
Q: When a website gets stuck in an infinite script loop showing alert dialogs, there's no way to close the browser other than killing it. Will we see something like Opera's "don't show any more dialogs from this page" to prevent this?
A: great suggestion Sven. I'll add it to our list of things to address. At this stage I cannot promise it for IE7

Linda [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: LindA: any consideration to use default windows theme colors in links?
A: IE 7 uses the default window os theme

Markus [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Considering how much of a win it would be for IE to equal or exceed its competitors in CSS compatibility, why is IE's CSS support not further along? Too difficult, not enough resources applied?
A: We are working hard to improve our CSS support. We are 100% committed. We concentrated first on top pain points and additional CSS functionality like :hover on all elements not just body etc. before we added more features. Luckily we also got much requested features in like improved selector support and fixed positioning

Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: @Chris, I do not want to pick things from previous versions, I want stuff on W2000 like the rendering
A: Ah, so you're asking for IE7 components on Win2000. We had to make the decision to limit IE7 to XPSP2 and Server 2003 and greater, due to the support matrix as well as some APIs we use that are missing on Win2k.

Jesse Mohrland[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Jesse, I mean Ctrl-Tab to select last active tab AND THEN cycle the tabs? This is how VS.NET's tabs working.
A: Likely will not be implemented but I will forward your request to the appropriate people.

Dave Massy [MSFT] (Moderator):
Q: Are you looking at a more lightweight extension model (based on .NET rather than COM), and an extension manager?
A: For IE7 there have been improvements to the manage add-ons functionality introduced in XP SP2. we are certainly looking at improving extensions to make it easier to write in .NET for future versions.

Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Is MS planning on exposing a centralized RSS directory? They should if RSS is such a big deal for IE7.
A: Yes, we are building an RSS platform, which you saw the initial release of with the Beta 2 Preview release. To learn more about the RSS platform, check out the RSS blog at http://blogs.msdn.com/rssteam

Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: When IE7 window crashes it crashed with all tabs. Firefox has session saver for this. Are the any plans for IE to implement similar things?
A: We do support a "restore last tabs group" feature right now, where, after loading IE again, you can right click on the tabs and select this option.

Markus [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: cj asked about clearing floats, will the overflow property be fixed to the extent that it can be used for this as per specs
A: Not quite sure what you mean, do you have a test case?

Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: @chris re: 143. "clear doesn't always cut it for some more complicated layouts. if it's supposed to then both ff and opera are getting it wrong. while one may be wrong, both usually aren't.
A: I'm not sure what you're asking for, specifically. Certainly :before and :after are useful features for design, I didn't mean to imply that clear replaces them; but I thought you were asking about clearing?

PeterG [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Is the XMLHttpRequest better used from javascript or activeX in IE7 (performancewise) ?
A: We now have Native XMLHTTP support so you can make XMLHTTP requests without using an ActiveX control. You should try that.

Jeremy [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: I thought the address bar would get another background color when using a secure connection (you had a blog post announcing this). Will this come in the next beta?
A: I believe the blog post you are referring to was specifically around the new AnitPhishing Filter that will change the background color of the address bar based on the results of the filter. AntiPhishing Filter is currently a feature in IE7.

Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Do you think that implementing a feature where folders which are placed on the "Link" toolbar are treated like how folders are treated in the favorites center is possible? Where if you middle click on the folder it will open in tabs.
A: Thanks for the feedback, we've heard this one before. We'll consider implementing it.

Anurag [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: WHEN WILL BE NEXT VERSION OF IE 7 AVALABLE
A: we are targeting first half of CY2006 for beta2 and second half of CY2006 for final release.

Travis Leithead (Expert):
Q: rI came in late, sorry if this has been asked. Any chance of getting an option to put the close tab [x] back over on the left side where it is on all MDI apps?
A: No worries! The close tab [x] button is placed where it is due to a design decision. I found it a little hard to get used to at first as well :) No, we have no plans to move it to the left (or right).

Dave Massy [MSFT] (Moderator):
Q: will you have support for "display: table" and table-cell? when moving away from html tables for layouts, these display styles are invaluable to equal heights.
A: We are not going to have support for the table CSS properties in IE7 but do hope to get to them in a future release. The work we have undertaken in IE7 around CSS is outlined at http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2006/02/02/523679.aspx shows significant steps forward to address the key issues web developers are facing. We know we have more work to do in the next release :)

Jesse Mohrland[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: I had IE7 beta1 and now to use beta 2 i uninstalled it but the process of install of beta 2 it completes very fast and says IE could'nt be installed see log for more detaiils please help
A: Did you recieve an error message? Is there any messages in the log file that indicate what the failure was?

Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: is there a way to detach tabs from the window you currently have open?
A: No, there is no way to do this, and we do not plan to implement this type of behavoiur in IE7. We'll consider this in future releases though.

Jesse Mohrland[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: How much money did the IE7 team lose collectively because of the seahawks game?
A: You don't want to know ;)

Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: re: 91... well, I meant for things like checking standards-compliance of standard .NET HTML widgets.
A: Ah. That's great feedback for the VS team - I know they've been doing similar features for standards-based design lately in ASP.Net tools.

Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: I noticed a lot of posts complaining about the way Find is implemented....too dialog oriented. Is there any plan to make Find more like FireFox, with a text box in the statusbar area?
A: We have heard this feedback quite a bit, and are considering options here. Thanks for the feedback.

Dave Massy [MSFT] (Moderator):
Q: Is there any interface to implement custom javascript tracer for IE?
A: Yes. See

Markus [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: what new features will IE7 have for media content? which is the way I think the net is moving toward.
A: You can position:fixed a movie with transparent backgrounds. This makes for very interessting effects on a page.

Sharon [Msft] (Expert):
Q: Can you create some option feature to see all added addons for IE and either remove them or make them inactive ?
A: Hal - have you checked out the Manage Add-ons Tool? It's available in the tools menu. The drop down "Add-ons that have been used by Internet Explorer" will show you what has been used.

Linda [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Am I alone without borders on drop-down boxes being dropped down?
A: The look and feel should not be changed for select control. Can you point me to a site you see the borders?

Jeremy [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Are there any easter egg in IE7 (perhaps a picture of IE7 Team
Developpment) ??Because I (L) Easter ! (A)A: No. there will not be any easter eggs in IE7.

Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: What about vertical or horizontal tab groups like in VS.NET?
A: We don't expect to implement this type of behaviour for IE7. We will consider it for future IE releases however, thanks for the feedback.

Markus [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: I see the absolute positiong properties are working better as in all four co-ordinates can now be used , but there is a problem with the bottom caluculation, is this being addresssed and will it be fixed in time?
A: do you have a test case, you can point us to? We would love to take a look.

Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: @chris re: 170. the ":after" class is used by some people (quite a lot on the css-d mailing list started by eric meyer) to clear floats so that an extra clearing div isn't needed in markup. this method has been invaluable to me. for ie i use "height: 0".
A: We've heard the request for :after (and :before).

Dave Massy [MSFT] (Moderator):
Q: Now that the IE team is back, can we expect some more frequent updates to the browser like how it was 'back in the day'? Binding it with the OS releases, especially 5 years apart is insane.
A: Yes. You can definitely expect frequent and regular releases of IE

Travis Leithead (Expert):
Q: I find that when i'm using IE 7 , When surfing around the web i get a lot of javascript errors comiing from various sites. Example of site would be www.excite.com Are the developers making imporvemnts on the Javascript engine in later versions?
A: The goal of the beta2 preview is to also give site owners a chance to verify that their sites will work great in IE7. During this transitionary time, we can expect a few growing pains on the web. We would like to see an improved javascript engine in the future as well.

Jason [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: I found the MSN Startseite, which always came back, in the IE 6 stupid. With the IE 7 will repeat itself?
A: Not sure I fully understand your question...are you referring to the first run page in IE 6? If so, we have a new first run page for IE 7 but it should only appear the very first time you open an instance of IE 7.

Jesse Mohrland[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Thanks so much for your hard work!
A: Your very welcome. It's been a pleasure thus far. :)

Dave Massy [MSFT] (Moderator):
Q: what version of ECMA javascript IE7 final will support? 1.4 ? 1.5 ?
A: we are not expecting any changes in JScript support in IE7. This is definitely something we want to address in a future release but for IE7 we needed to prioritise our work for developers around the CSS issues.

Travis Leithead (Expert):
Q: @travis re: 191. you mean we're stuck with the X on the individual tabs and can't get rid of it? i hope i'm understanding you wrong, which, knowing me, is very possible.
A: Let's just say that there are no plans to change it for this version. Sorry!

Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: can someone advise me about using a freecom DVB-T stick (usb) in windows media center 2005?
A: we're focusing on Internet Explorer today.

Linda [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Linda, the question withdrawn -- perhaps the bug in my windows theme. Sorry.
A: That is fine. You are welcomed with any question you have.

Jason [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: I can't manage my speedtouch modem with web interface, HTTP authentification fails in IE7 ! It 's work with IE6 ! Where is the bug ?
A: I will follow up on this with our compat team. By any chance have you tried the User-Agent String workaround? http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2006/02/03/524256.aspx

PeterG [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: are the any plans to fix scrollbar quirk bug?
A: Yes, we certaily want to fix any bug that detracts from the user experience. If you could please send details to IETELL@Microsoft.com That would be helpful

Travis Leithead (Expert):
Q: Travis, what about to place [x] on the lone tab too? To not to udrag mouse too long..
A: If we did, we'd have to figure out what to display in the browser when no tabs are open!

Anurag [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Questions: When i leave IE7 inactive for about and hour it closes . Any reason as to why this happen s?dsns?
A: sounds like a bug. We are going to address a lot of bugs in the final release. Thanks for the great feedback.

Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: if you click on get more search providers your automaticly get msn search back even when you didn't click it and deleted it in the search option in internet explorer, is this going to change?
A: Could you be a little more specific in your question? Are you saying that when you add a new search provider, the default still remains MSN Search?

PeterG [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: For the last 60 seconds of the chat can we have permission to be trolls? :P
A: No, Sorry.

Jeremy [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Is there anyway to set or predefine the feeds to sync at a predefined time. Example: I always want my feeds to update every 1hour, so when I add a new feed it takes this time, instead of the time it gives now.
A: JoeM: We have heard this feedback from others as well. Please provide this feedback to the ietell@microsoft.com.

Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: Chris: re: Q[97] Any page. Random page. Channel9 sometimes for example. Or www.horde.org.
A: That's strange - I don't see it happen for me. I'll forward to the RSS testers.

Dave Massy [MSFT] (Moderator):
Q: With SSL support even if I put a cert in my trusted root why am I still prompted with that huge warning if it is not one of the official MS trusted cert's that ship with the browser/OS?
A: Hi Stephen, We don't have an expert in that area in the chat at the moment I'm afraid. If you watch the team blog at http://blogs.msdn.com/ie you can expect to see more information around this as well as the article at http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/ietechcol/cols/dnexpie/ie7_https_imps.asp

Markus [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Can someone explain what the big concern about IE 7's CSS support is, and will features like this be able to be updated (like a plug-in) as new functionality becomes available? I Don't understand why so many people are stuck on CSS 2..
A: Every update we do to our layout engine (even in the name of standards) will rise concerns about application compatibility. we are trying to mitigate this problem and a good article can be found here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/IETechCol/cols/dnexpie/ie7_css_compat.asp

Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Have you considered making these chats more friendly to people in other countries? Here in Australia it runs from 5:00am-6:00am, which is too early.
A: We'll consider having chats at different times in the future to make it easy for our friends all over the world. Although speaking as someone stuck in rainy seattle, I'll try my best to get the IE team to come to Australia for a personal visit :)

Travis Leithead (Expert):
Q: Travis, simply close the browser?
A: We could possibly do that, but this might confuse users, since the behavior would change from close tab to close window!

Anurag [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: How many people on IE team ?
A: We have lots of great people and we are currently hiring. :)

Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: @192 I was referring to the next version of IE with all the ^^^ above things you talk about... Will IE8 be released before 2010?
A: Yes, IE8 will be released before 2010.

Jesse Mohrland[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Are you guys confident and pleased of the outcome so far with IE7?
A: We would always like to do more but it is always nice to see your work make it to the world.

Q: are you aware that a quote (or anything) above even the XHTML doctype will trigger quirks rendering mode and if so do you plan to remove this?
A: this has been fixed with our ?XML prolog fix

PeterG [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: what u guys doing after this chat? back to work or going for a brewsky?
A: Back to work. Fixing bugs and driving up the quality of the product. :D

Jason [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Hi. Why have the build 5299 leaked to the public before the official 5296 Beta2 arrived?
A: The 5299 build was not purposely leaked to the public.

Jeremy [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Why feeds autodiscovery works in hosted WebBrowser Control? I think it's a bug...
A: Wasker, feed discovery should work in a hosted webbrowser control. This is by design.

Dave Massy [MSFT] (Moderator):
Q: In your blog posts you haven't discuessed Javascript changes too much (with the XMLHTTPRequest being an exception), will you plan to improve your JS support? Will you add support for standard methods like obj.addEventListener(), obj.watch()?
A: We aren't expecting any additions to JScript in IE7. We have heard the requests and want to concentrate on script engine improvements in the future. We know we have plenty of work to do here :)

Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: There are many program groups in Microsoft such as the the WinFX team who are deploying new features every three months, is the IE team working only per release evry x amount of years or will we have rolling feature packs dlivered in the future?
A: It's very difficult to think of delivering IE as a set of feature packs - we need to replace the engine every time. We will be releasing engine upgrades to IE more frequently in the future than we have for the past 5 years, however. (Note that the Winfx team actually has to roll out an entire engine upgrade every time too.)

Travis Leithead (Expert):
Q: Will IE7 support 256bit SSL encryption?
A: We'll be addressing a lot of these security-related questions on an up-coming blog post. Keep watching the blog-- http://blogs.msdn.com/ie

Linda [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: With SSL support even if I put a cert in my trusted root why am I still prompted with that huge warning if it is not one of the official MS trusted cert's that ship with the browser/OS?
A: It is something interesting to be considered but we want to keep the consistency of the user experiences.

Anurag [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: IE7 is great ! Thx for all ! I love Tabs Thumbails, Zoom, ClearType and Print Preview... ! Have you any registry tips to custom IE 7 ?

Jason [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: I have a issue with IE7 When i leave IE7 on and leave for some time like an hour of so. When i get back i no longer see IE7 and have to restart the program. Is their any reason that you know of why this happends?
A: I haven't actually heard of or seen this, but it sounds like a possible bug and we are planning on fixing many many more bugs before we ship.

Markus [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Re the most requested CSS support that won't make it into IE7 and slide to the next release: can we look for that 1-2 years after IE7 is released? Or will it be more in the 3-4 year range?
A: Yes, you can definitely expect a quicker release cycle after IE7

Linda [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Personally I like the x(close button) on the tab, if you ever do consider moving this to the left, have an option to have the x on the tab or to the left.
A: It is something interesting to consider but we want to keep the consistency of the user experiences.

Max Stevens [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: With the quick search box, if you already have terms in there and you go to change the provider, would it be possible to not have it automatically search on change and rely on the user to either press enter or click the search button?
A: We actually consider that a feature, in that it reduces the number of mouse clicks necessary to start your search with your chosen provider after you finish typing your query.

Anurag [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: 60 seconds to go... Thanks IE team... It has been worth the wait and is great, Cheers (B)

Dave Massy [MSFT] (Moderator):
Q: Will you publish a book about the development of IE add-ons (MS Press)? We only have Scott Roberts' IE5 book, which is pretty old now. In order to get more people write IE add-ons, you should provide them great documentation and samples.
A: Great idea. We are working on improving the documentation on http://msdn.microsoft.com/ie Maybe it is time to talk to some authors about a book.

Anurag [MSFT] (Expert):

Q: Do you guys maintain any kind of dialog with any of your competitors like The Mozilla Group, Opera or the Safari team at Apple?
A: Absolutely, in a number of ways. We've been working together with them on High-assurance SSL certificates; we've worked together with them on RSS (we share our RSS icon with Mozilla!), and of course we work together with them frequently in the W3C working groups. (See a picture of myself and Håkon Lie of Opera on my blog - http://blogs.msdn.com/cwilso/archive/2005/10/19/482656.aspx)

Q: Y cant I have IE7 beta and IE6 installed at the same time?
A: We made a conscious decision to not support side-by-side so we can focus on bigger better features. Technically it is quite difficult to make this work without causing big problems.

Markus [MSFT] (Expert):
Q: re:147 - I should've said contain floats but I will try to find the bit in the CSS specs and put together a demo,
A: thanks :)

Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):

Dave Massy [MSFT] (Moderator):
Q: @dave re: 173. yeah i get pointed to that a lot, but it doesn't list what you *do* have. all it does is make vague generalities. developers are stuck with testing everything out themselves like http://css-discuss.incutio.com/?page=IE7
A: Hi cj, We do have CSS reference docs that document what IE does support at http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/workshop/author/css/reference/css_ref_entry.asp?frame=true we'll be updating that for IE7 shortly. If you spot errors or stuff that is missing please let us know.

PeterG [MSFT] (Expert):

A: I will follow up on this with our compatibility team on this.

Jason [MSFT] (Expert):
Thanks all, talk to you later.
