What is AccessMyLibrary.com?
AccessMyLibrary.com is a service of Thomson Gale (www.gale.com), one of the world's largest publishers of reference information. Thomson Gale has been serving the information needs of libraries for over 50 years and is recognized worldwide as a leading advocate for libraries and for library patrons.
Thomson Gale recognizes that Internet search engines are changing the way people look for information. In response, we designed AccessMyLibrary.com to help information-seekers become aware of the resources they are entitled to access through their library by making these resources 'findable' via internet search engines. For detailed information about the service, click here.
How does the service work?
Today, many people use the open web to conduct their research, utilizing their favorite search engines. While search engines often make it possible to locate a substantial variety of data, they don't advise researchers about the premium-level content available through their libraries - content that is usually far superior to standard web postings.
But with AccessMyLibrary.com, Thomson Gale is changing the methodology of research.
AccessMyLibrary.com enables search engines to "see" small portions of content from Thomson Gale products. These portions appear in the results pages of search engines. By clicking on a result, web users are directed to AccessMyLibrary.com, where an authentication process gives the searcher access to participating libraries. After being authenticated, the information-seeker can view the requested essay or article and continue to explore the wealth of information from Thomson Gale.
Can any researcher access the content?
No. AccessMyLibrary is designed to grant access only to users with a valid entitlement to an eligible library, so Publishers may rest assured that their content remains in a protected space and can only be viewed within the Thomson Gale product.
How does this service benefit me, a publisher?
AccessMyLibrary.com will help users of internet search engines locate information previously invisible to them. Now, users will encounter valuable new content - content they might never have seen otherwise - and build a strong association with the source of that content, the publisher. This creates brand awareness and broadens your reach while introducing new customers to your publications and services. And all without any additional investment on your part.
Many journal and magazine publishers have a strong interest in "getting their message out" to the largest audience possible. AccessMyLibrary.com supports this mission by engaging all levels of researcher, from the casual to the serious.
And there are revenue benefits, too. Thomson Gale will, as always, record usage for your content. Each time a research views a full-text article "in the library", that viewing translates into additional royalties for your content.
Looking down the road, Thomson Gale will soon introduce a complimentary program to make it easy for web searchers to connect seamlessly to your own web site, too, generating additional site traffic. Publishers will benefit from this web traffic in a number of ways as they gain support for their particular business objectives.
