How to Migrate from a Lotus Notes/Domino Messaging Infrastructure to Exchange Server 2003

This topic introduces the steps for migrating from a Lotus Notes/Domino infrastructure to Exchange Server 2003. By default, Windows accounts with administrative access are denied permission to read the content of ordinary Exchange mailboxes. For ExMerge to merge data with the original database, it must be able to open mailboxes in that database. Therefore, ExMerge cannot be used for this purpose by an administrator without first overriding the permissions denials.

This topic contains links to procedures for the following tasks:

Connecting Microsoft® Exchange Server 2003 to a Lotus Notes release 5 environment

Performing directory synchronization

Integrating calendar information

Migrating mailboxes from Lotus Notes to Exchange 2003.

  Note

With the release of Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1), Microsoft Exchange Connector for Lotus Notes, Microsoft Exchange Calendar Connector, and the Exchange Migration Wizard support Lotus Domino release 6 or later. However, the procedures in this appendix are intended for Lotus Domino release 5.0.10, which is the recommended version for Exchange 2003 components.

Before You Begin

Before you perform the procedures in this topic, ensure that the server running Lotus Domino meets the following prerequisites:

The server is running Lotus Domino release 4.6 or 5.x

The server is not configured as the inbound Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) mail gateway to the Internet

  Important

If a server running Lotus Domino is configured as the inbound SMTP mail gateway for your organization, the addresses for SMTP messages sent to Exchange users from the Internet will be corrupted because all messages sent to Exchange through Connector for Lotus Notes are appended with the Lotus Domino domain name. To avoid this problem, configure Exchange, not Lotus Domino, as the inbound SMTP mail gateway for messages inbound from the Internet. For more information about this issue, see Microsoft Knowledge Base article 255160, "XFOR: SMTP Messages from Lotus Notes SMTPMTA to Exchange 2000 Append @NotesDomain to the Sender's Address" (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=3052&kbid=255160).
