The Web 2.0 Is Here
Web 2.0 is white hot at the moment, and not just because of the hype, but because of the insane amount of stuff that's being built for it right now.

I know, I know. It sounds like the Cluetrain Manifesto all over again. Well, it kinda is.

Except that it's actually happening today all over the place and you can use it now (see BaseCamp, BackPack, del.icio.us, Flickr, Kiko, DropCash, Meebo, AjaxOffice, Bindows and dozens of others if you're not sure.)

Of course, VCs have latched onto Web 2.0 big time and that's fueling fears of a new bubble. But this only obscures the real value in it.

I've been closely examining O'Reilly's Web 2.0 meme map and it really is a set of interlocking, reinforcing concepts. The more I study the Web 2.0, the more I realize this visualization is key.

Imagine:

1) Using the entire Internet as your API for new applications. The leverage and reuse possibilities are probably boundless.

2) Permalink requirements make your Web 2.0 applications stable, even when they're based on a dozen underlying services all over the Web.

3) Trust becomes a critical service in the Web 2.0 platform (which is the entire Web). Leveraging Wikipedia entries, Google PageRanks, Amazon Reviews, del.icio.us bookmark counts, and many others makes collective trust a measurable, quantifiable, and so vitally, a reusable service in the Web 2.0 stack.

4) Remixing data with high quality Web 2.0-friendly sources yields new possibilities and value. This is one of the bigger concepts that would help many organizations leverage Web 2.0 the most. When they ask: Why care about Web 2.0? Tell them: You may only be realizing a fraction of your potential. Read the Wikipedia entry article link above to see how remixing information can quickly add vast value to your IT infrastructure.

As important though, is the tangible value which the Web 2.0 provides today:

- Leveraging The Long Tail. Amazon and eBay used this idea to build companies worth billions and billions. This is how. Web 2.0 provides both the audience and the services.

- Small Pieces, Loosely Joined. Monolithism is dead, we can't build big stuff like that any more. It's not agile nor can what you build be aggregated, deliver sustained value, or even survive for long.

- Self-Service and Participation. Fostering this lets you capture new value in your Web 2.0 apps 24 hours a day. Examples: Tagging, ranking, trackbacks, reputations.

- Radical Decentralization. Single sources of function are single sources of failure and are unacceptable now. And they don't scale to either deliver or capture significant value.

- Emergent Behavior. Your Web 2.0 functionality can be reused, remixed, aggregated, and syndicated and the resulting value reintegrated back into your application.

There's lots more and all of the tenets of Web 2.0 feed back into each other, it really is intriguing.

I know you won't be convinced without examples. Play with the some of the Web 2.0 I mentioned at the beginning of this post.

And then Google for ways people are remixing, aggregating, and syndicating this stuff. You will be floored.

A few thoughts: first, podcasting isn't in the graphic, and I think that's a shame. Same with RSS. Second, I think that the Craig's List/Google Maps mashup at http://housingmaps.com is one of the most convincing ways to demonstrate web2.0. It's just cool.

Sam made this comment,
I don't know about Ajax per se - it's a great technique, but what's common to all the above is user benefit - that's really what's great about web 2.0 - putting users back in control, giving immediate benefit, and letting them figure it out.

We're working on an app I'd love comments on: www.writely.com, a very simple, clean web word processor. Sounds odd, but once you try it, you'll find lots of uses for it - trust me.

We also talk about some of this on the writely blog: writely.blogspot.com - sorry if that's considered impolite to post here, but it really is on topic.

Ajax, in my opinion, is an extra. Del.icio.us is so much more Web 2 than google's email address autocompletion, for instance. The key is user participation, trusting the user, and building a site with the full understanding that the only thing that will keep people there is the value you give them. I've heard of so many people leave photo-sharing sites, because display resolution was limited in an effort to sell more prints. I bet Flickr understands never to let that happen.

At Music For Dozens, we understand that our users are doing us a favor, so anytime we come to a junction, w/r/t to say, should podcast feeds be available to all artists, etc., we say to ourselves, "that should be a user option" - let the user's control the site and they will come back.

juergen made this comment,
I bet Meebo will fail! What is your bet?

Why? Can Meebo meet the following success factors?

Here are my questions and doubts for each of these:

> “If you are building a Web startup with the intention of flipping it > to one of the majors, only three things matter; > - technology/IP, > - users > - the quality of your technical team,”

1 what IP do they have? can someone just own an IP on something so simple? a webbased IM is so easy to make… 2 users? how many real users do they have? people are addicted to MSN, AIM, etc. If meebo dies one day to another, how many people will actually look for a replacement of that one instead of going back to MSN?

3 technical team? 2 people? does that convince everyone…? It’s fine with me, I’ve seen many coders, but I am not sure that can convince easily against the power of big groups.

> “If the company has market leadership in a new product space or market segment than the valuation goes up significantly,”

market leadership? talk to me more about it. What type of leadership do they have? They’re not replacing the IM, they don’t have the technology of the IM, they can be stopped anytime by a server that wouldn’t allow them to connect, then can be sued anytime by people who don’t understand they’re sending their password to meebo server… (it’s not written is it?) 5.how much of the market do they “own” really?

> “Meebo has essentially created a persistent connection/relationship > with their users.”

who said that? > “why go with a zero-revenue model that’s going to be sold for $50 million tops when you could pick a business model with the potential to generate some really, really serious cash?”

sure, it could generate cash. If it does, MSN, AIM, etc, have no difficuly in matching this offer, or to prevent meebo from making any money. Remember that meebo revenues depend on the good will of MSN AIM, etc who still haven’t prevented meebo from connecting onto their server.

What is their plan B if MSN/AIM block all connections?

Thus, my bet that meebo cannot succeed!

Any other ideas you think are good examples? If you have any drop me a line at www.jeikei.com

I think it is dangerous to have an "either or" mentality when it comes to the debate surrounding tagging vs. taxonomy. One of the key ideas in cognitive science is the notion of the semantic network - a flow of semantic associations or related words. The clusters that you see on flickr are just semantic networks formed from tags.

AN OPEN LETTER TO ANYONE IN THE PEACE OFFICER FIELD!!

I FEEL VERY STRONGLY ABOUT THIS ISSUE BECAUSE I KNOW OF A PEACE OFFICER LISTED ON ONE OF THOSE MEMORIAL PAGES TO THOSE BRAVE FALLEN OFFICERS!!!

TO: Hon. Stephen Harper Office of the Prime Minister 80 Wellington Street Ottawa, Ontario, Canada K1A 0A2

Twenty-seven Canadian peace officers were praised today by Prime Minister Stephen Harper, for their long and exemplary service to Canada.

TO: Congressman David Dreier 233 Cannon HOB Washington, DC, U.S.A. 20515

That is why I introduced H.R. 3900, the Justice for Peace Officers Act, with the strong support of Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca, to make it a federal crime to murder a peace officer -- whether federal, state or local -- and flee the country, providing concurrent jurisdiction for the federal government to prosecute the suspect.

Dear Sirs

I see you are doing legislation on behalf of federal peace officers or commemorating their service.

As such, can you believe that Malaspina University College in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada says a letter received with a closing salutation of “former federal peace officer” is threatening??

That is what Dr. Patrick Ross, Vice-President of Student Services, said in a recent meeting??

This Dr. Patrick was referring to a letter received from a person who was a federal peace officer and since retirement he has closed his letters with “former federal peace officer” after his signature and name??

I know I had trouble trying to get a simple class outline out of one of their History Professors, Professor Cheryl Warsh, who refused to send me a course outline for an interested student from America??

What was so secretive about a course outline??

In closing, have you ever heard anything so disgusting as a simple closing salutation of “former federal peace officer” being threatening as indicated by Dr. Patrick Ross from Malaspina University College !!

Tell that to all those federal peace officers listed on the numerous memorial pages to those fallen officers!!

I think people should tell this Dr. Patrick Ross exactly what they think of his statement!!

HOPEFULLY SOMEONE WILL TELL DR. PARTICK ROSS WHAT THEY THINK OF HIS COMMENT THAT A CLOSING SALUTATION OF “FORMER FEDERAL PEACE OFFICER” IS THREATENING ON A LETTER!!

HOPEFULLY, YOU WILL AGREE WITH ME THAT ROSS IS AN IDIOT TO MAKE SUCH A STATEMENT!!!

PATRICK ROSS SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF HIMSELF!!!
