Update: A lot of people have asked me about how I created the pie charts. Please refer to my comment to find out more.

After nearly a week of collecting data with Mint, I decided it would be time for me to take a close look and dissect the stats. I’ve also been playing around with pie charts for a little side-project of mine, so this is a good time to test drive those.

I’m desperately trying to do something “simple”, yet moderately challenging, because I caught an “inflammation of the tonsils”. In the summer. Groovy, isn’t it? Anway, I can’t sleep, because I’ve been sleeping all day. And the past few days. If I find out about the person who generously “gave” this to me, I predict some major kicks to the booty.

Note: Umpteen-thousand people have visited this site within the last week, so yes, the data is quite representative, I think.

Browser Family

Even though Firefox represents the largest piece of the pie, it’s nevertheless quite shocking to me that IE is this big. And IE 6 is the single most-used browser with a whopping 33%. A full third of all visitors. Phew. I just hope that’s because those folks are at work and have no other choice but to use IE 6…

The other flavors of IE (anything from 7 to 5.0) are a minority and only make up a single percent altogether. It’s really relieving to see that it’s a waste of time to support IE 5.x any longer. If anything, websites not supporting it might encourage users to switch to something decent. And by “decent” I don’t mean IE 6.

Platform

Wow, this is surprising. Not that is really surprises me though, since I’ve been tracking these numbers since longe before Mint (or ShortStat, for that matter). But still… wow. Considering how Mac-centric this site is, I couldn’t believe these numbers when I first saw them. Which was about after I released my first icon set for Mac and Windows.

It’s time to switch, ladies and gentlemen.

Screen Resolution

This is another piece of data that’s very helpful to me in maintaining this site, as it’s conceived for anything upwards of 1024x768 px. I’m glad to see that nearly everybody is using at least this size and many surpass it.

There’s a few people running 800x600 in the 8% that use “Other” resolutions. I’m sorry for those. But I made the switch and I’m not going back. The rest of those 8% are some really exotic resolutions, the least common of which is… you may have guessed it: my preferred resolution.

Language

Well, nothing too terribly surprising in this chart. It’s interesting to see where you’re all coming from. Welcome!

(I should note that this is not a “scientific” view at where you’re coming from. Mint merely checks (I think) the language that’s being used on your system. So there may be a few people visiting this site while using an OS with a language that’s different from their own. But it still should be more or less accurate.)

Those pie charts are excellent. I’m very curious to know what if you used any tools other than Photoshop or Illustrator to create them?

Wow! Impressive works you made.
I first thought all the charts are made from Mint, but I guess not. I wouldn’t hesitate to purchase Mint if it can generate those beautiful charts.
Just out of curiosity, haven’t Shaun fixed that incorrect Safari version detection?

I have to also ask if those charts are just photoshop/illustartor drawings or if there is some app your working on that produces them. They are absolutely georgous.

As for the info, your stats match mine almost to a ‘t.’

Nice Charts. 33% IE means, next time, when you come up with a new design, you must make sure it looks good in IE too - more headache ??? ;-)

I have to say that it’s not fair to show off these charts without telling us how you generated them. :-)

My guess is some kind of Photoshop script was used. There’s no way that I would go to all that effort manually just to generate some pie charts for a blog.

I created the charts this way:

1. used the data to create pie charts in Illustrator
2. imported the paths into Photoshop
3. black magic.

Seriously though, most of the work is simply done in PS and yes, it was a lot of work - for pie charts.
But once I had the first chart down (the browser one), it was easier. I just imported e.g. the paths of OS, recolored, etc.

I like them a lot myself (that’s why I’ve put them here, otherwise I’d just have used text instead), I just wish there was some easier way to do this. But there isn’t.

I’ve got Mint and I intend to do something similar to this in the future, although I’m only getting a maximum of about 190 visits a day so I guess I’d better wait a few more weeks to get a decent amount of data.

I doubt my charts will be as nice as yours either! I think I’ll try the ones Veerle did a tutorial on …

With the exception of the number of Mac users using Internet Explorer, I’m not really surprised by the numbers shown. I do wonder why quite a high number of Mac users are using Internet Explorer - if most people say that they are getting a Mac to get away from Microsoft software, then why are they using Internet Explorer for that platform? Or maybe they are recent switchers, or because of other restrictions, such as a workplace Mac (I hope it’s the latter two).

And the chart showing where visitors are coming from is definitely not scientific. My computer is set to use U.S. English, even though I’m in Singapore, and your site could have detected me as from the U.S.. A more acurate way could have been to check the country of the I.S.P. the visitor is coming from. Barring those people behind proxies, you can accurately tell where a person is really coming from.

As always Sascha, beautiful masterpieces… Those features with browsers, system, language etc. statistics are avaliable from Mint 1.08 I suppose?

Hehehe, a “whopping 33%” or not.. if you count all the percentages of Firefox, it wins eitherway!

I really hope that IE7 will be a lót more CSS-friendly, or that everyone will use Safari or Firefox instead :P

First of all I have to say that your charts are awsome. It would be great if this could be done automatically. WHo knows maybe someday someone will do that.

The charts reflect the really very well. I have a site that has around 1000 - 1500 visitors a day and the results are about the same.

Exellent piecharts!
Really surprised that Opera only got 3% which I think is really sad, because it’s an awesome browser with tons of features (just a little hidden tho).
I’ve tried Firefox but couldnt adjust, guess that I’m a total Opera addict. :)

BTW. I‘m on that 1% too. (Sweden)

I really like your chart design.

I’d like to ask how you input the data and text around the pie chart.
Do you input and array them manually in PS or these data is formed by AI itself?

Congrats, Sascha, these are amazing charts!

Btw: I prefer using non-localized software, in this case the EN-US to the DE-DE version of Firefox—probably as do others. To assume that these users actually request your pages from within the respective country might lead to a wrong conclusion.

Just a thought…

AOLEX: I am actually trying to do jus that at the moment. Practically impossible with the lack of antialiased drawing featues in GD2, bundled with PHP. I do not have access to ImageMajick (spelling?) at the moment as I am too lazy to compile it in, but if it has antialiased geometry I might consider it. I wrote a GD2 function to make an antialiased circle, bit it takes like 10 seconds to draw that one circle… bah! I should try to do it ;)

No editing posts, I guess… but also the shadows will give issue from the lack of layer-blurring in GD (the bloody thing is like Paint, no layers), so you cannot make a shadow with alpha transparency in any human way…

Opera 7 identifies itself as IE6.0. It changes HTTP-USER-AGENT string (look up it’s settings).

Opera, Mozilla and Firefox are able to disguise themselfs as IE6 (if th user asks to), so it might be that most of that IE6 piece of the pie is not even IE6 (I’m on Opera 9 Beta and it’s set as IE6).
Also, i believe mint takes the “localization setting” from your computer, not really from where your IP is, since i don’t believe that the “rest of the world” would be just 1%.
I’m from Romania, but my computer is set with english (american) locale, so you might put me in the list as american :-)

Great site, nice article. As for resolution keep in mind most people don’t have their browser maximised. As for the language it might be even a lot stronger. A lot of international companies use an english setup and don’t allow their users to switch to their native language. Actually, I’m dutch but using English OSX at home since I’m used to it and it works fine for me.
