64bit Exchange - a correction to my blog entry...

Well I've been a bit busy dealing with questions and comments from my blog entry about 64bit Exchange  the other day, and responding to (generally positive) mails and articles.  There certainly seems to be lots of interest about this decision.     But I made a mistake in my original blog. I totally misheard something.  So I've been corrected by the Exchange team (who will be blogging about E12 in 64bit soon - honestly)

What I said was:

I also unserstand that during the betas, there will be both a 32 bit and 64 bit version of Exchange 12 so you can compare the performance gains.

But the correct reason for doing this was to ensure that early beta testers who have not yet moved to 64-bit hardware can begin to evaluate the feature set of Exchange 12 (and not related to perf testing)

So apologies for misleading you.  I was caught up in the excitement of the announement on Tuesday and completely got this wrong.  Sorry...

# Very strange...

Okay. So E12 will be one of the few platforms being forced to go 64-bit.

But development will be producing a 32-bit as well as 64 bit right until the end of the beta.

Why ?

If your forcing your entire user community to go 64-bit (with all the infrastructure and hardware restrictions that entail), why bother with a 32-bit ?

Or is this a more cynical "Lets increase the customer lock-in and revenue by getting Exchange customers onto the 64-bit platform." ?

It's another classic example of MS "Rip and Replace" . The Redmond Nanny state tells its customers which platform that this piece of software will run on.

I suspect that this is nothing more than a cynical game of "chicken" with the customers. I bet there *will* be a 32-bit version of E12...

I think when the time comes the 32-bit option will still be there, as long as testing goes well. there is no reason to develop and test a product if there is not the possibility of rolling it out. That said, I think users need to go to 64-bit on Exchange 2006.

I like the 64 bit better than the 32 bit. The features are great and I have a great time replacing beta. Plus, the capacity is greater and it serves as a bonus.

Bill - that's my 15 minutes of fame I suppose :-) I just wish I'd captured all of the Exchange 12 overview and demo delivered by Terry the other day: (http://blogs.technet.com/exchange/articles/405992.aspx). His demo of speech and calendar integration prompted the guy next to me to say. "Well that's convinced me. We're moving totally to E12" Huge European organisation too. So there's some excitement there about our decision...
