Session Materials

This session consists of a Windows Media presentation and the following demonstrations:

1.

Backup Best Practices  This demonstration shows best practices for backing up Exchange 2003, such as how to set up a scheduled backup. Disaster preparedness activities are also covered, such as mailbox retention and backing up the metabase.

2.

Mailbox Recovery  This demonstration shows how to use the Mailbox Recovery Center and introduces the Recovery Storage Group. Using the Mailbox Recovery Center, you’ll see how to return a deleted mailbox to a user. Using the Recovery Storage Group, you’ll see how to recover deleted items to a user’s mailbox. The Recovery Storage Group is covered more in-depth in the next demonstration called Recovering Stores.

3.

Recovering Stores  This demonstration describes how to use the Recovery Storage Group to recover an entire mailbox store. By using the dial-tone method of recovery, we can bring the mailbox store up to date while experiencing minimal downtime. This demo also shows how to be prepared for an alternate server recovery.

4.

Replacing an Exchange Server  This demonstration shows how to restore the system state of an existing Exchange server to a replacement server in preparation for a disaster recovery installation of Exchange.

5.

Alternate Server Recovery  This demonstration shows how to use alternate server recovery to retrieve items from a user’s mailbox. We’ll identify the five settings on the alternate server that must match the original server. After restoring the backup to the alternate server, we’ll see how to use Mailbox Recovery Center and LDIFDE to import a user into the alternate Active Directory. The ExMerge two-step process is then used to create a .pst file from a user’s mailbox.
