South Park: Chef's Luv Shack
HA! And more HA! Luv Shack takes advantage of the South Park license through the game show genre. Think of Jeopardy meets Mario Party. Chef's Luv Shack features a slew of some pretty outrageous trivia questions including some South Park particular ones. In between the barrage of questions, double downs and pressure rounds you'll go to action rounds with mini games based on the gameplay of classics like Asteroids, Galaxian and even the original Donkey Kong. In true South Park fashion, these games offer a comedic twist (Asses in Space). Let it be known that like Mario Party, Smash Bros. and Battletanx this game is 4 player specific in that it only works if you have a few friends to fart around with (literally). It's a great part game, with a mature content. Just in time for the holidays!
Although the wacky 2D graphics of the South Park lot are basic, Acclaim has done a great job of recreating the animation and movement of the actual TV show. This is especially apparent during the mini games. All of the questions are easy to read and the menu screens are basic. So the graphics are functional. Let's face it, this isn't Rayman 2 but it is a quircky graphical presentation, just like the show.
HA! Here's where paydirt is hit in representing the show. All of the characters have their own unique lines and the Chef is a piss. The game show host's voice appropriately wreaks of cheese. All of the sound effects and audioscape serve to amplify the goal of the game. That goal is to be funny and Chef's Luv Shack certainly is funny.
Picture Alex Trebeck with a bit of heroine dusted into his coffee. There you have it. You and three other players get to choose how many rounds you play and the game pretty much takes over from there. Players select from categories like Lesbian Role Models, famous Gay Cowboys and Sucks or Canadian. From there, a question is delivered and it's a race to the buzzer as you tap in to answer from a multiple choice set of questions. Intermittent mini game rounds burst in with some solid play control and fun factor. The games very from variations of classics like super sprint, asteroids and more.
All in all, Luv Shack is a fun experience. But I don't think that there are enough questions or mini games to keep you and your pals playing this game for an eternity. Then again, if this game is played the way it's supposed to be (intoxicated and at a party) than not too many people will care about the variety of questions!
That's all that this game is, a multiplayer sobberknocker! Acclaim is really, really keying in on multiplayer gaming with recent titles like Turok Rage Wars. This is a good thing. Social games mean that more gamers out there will create a social environment around gaming and deflate the stigma that all gamers are geeks.
The wow factor of the South Park liscence tends to die out pretty quickly for me. Although, hardcore South Park fans will probably dig the lines and mini games for eons to come. It would have been nice to see a bit more variety in the games and questions to increased the longevity of the game. Like sex, Luv Shack is not designed to be a single player game. It's a party title and should be treated that way. If you and your buds are into entertaining on a regular basis with the ultimate party machine (N64) than you ought to check this out. If you're having a bash this weekend or soon, rent this thing. Hey, take this game for what it really is, It's a real laugh!
