Talk about me behind my back. Post things here, or visit my new website or my journal.
Hi Martin. It was an email sub.
And thanks for the congrats. |
Congratulations on the sale to Faeries.
Was that an e-mail sub or hardcopy? |
Hi Sue. You're absolutely right that it looks very similar to my old site! I have no design skills at all and couldn't come up with anything significantly different. Some differences are that it's all laid out with stylesheets, not tables, that it's a fully dynamic site so that I don't have to upload pages every time I change something (which was the main reason for changing it), and that it has a flexible size depending on the size of the browser window.
Not sure what happened to the pic on the bio page when you visited. Must have been a temporary thing because it's there when I look. |
Site looks nice -- though it doesn't seem that different from your old one (as I recall.) Of course, that could be because the picture is the same. BTW, the pic on your bio page is missing.
You certainly have lived a fascinating (and well-traveled) life. SueO2 |
Hi Douglas. No apology necessary. I expressed myself very badly in the discussion at the time. Patrick |
I know its kinda late but I must apologize for attemping to make you the fault when I was high strung way back then when I first came to this site. I wish I had just viewed the site and posts rather than trying to do verbal warfare with you committed writers. Anyway i thought i owed you an apology.

My website has moved to a new address: http://www.patricksamphire.co.uk. If you've got a link to it, please, please update it!
I've also redesigned the site, so let me know what you think. |
Grin. Thanks guys.
You're right, Martin. Sigh. Perhaps I should become American... Mikal: My taste... It does seem to be lapsing far too often. If I recall, I liked your previous story in LSS as well. I don't know what's happening. :( |
I still say he should get his own television show.
Jackie |
Damn it Patrick you're just getting too successful - that's just not....English |
Great news, Patrick! |
Congrats, Patrick! You have wonderful taste in stories! (I refer of course to your latest review of LSS.)
Oh, and the RoF sale--that's nice, too... |
Another sale to RoF???? That's awsome, Patrick. Congratulations!!!!!
Justin |
WOOT! Fabulous news about ROF! Holy cow, you're an ROF FREQUENT CONTRIBUTOR!!! Dang, you should get your own television show.
Jackie |
Hi Martin. Yes, it was good to meet you again too. Always so busy at Cons, never time to talk properly with everyone you want to. Ah, well. Hope you had a good con. |
Good to see you, if only briefly, at Glasgow.
Must find time for a longer chat sometime. |
Thanks, all of you.
Yep, this was a fairly quick sale. I suspect this one didn't go through one of the slush readers first. |
Many congrats on the great sale! |
Damn! RoF regular. Congrats. |
Congrats, Patrick!
Kathy S |
Congrats on the sale, Patrick! It sounds like she bought that one pretty quick, compared to other Realms response times. Go you! |
Nice job, Patrick! |
Big congrats on the RoF sale, Patrick! That's awsome.
Justin |
Thanks, Josh! |
Great story, Patrick! |
Ah. Thanks Mark. Now, of course, I feel stupid. :) |
And of course... congratulations! :) |
Normal HTML works: A Field Guide to Ugly Places |
How do you do links on the rumormill anyway? |
My short story, "A Field Guide to Ugly Places" is now up on Strange Horizons:
http://www.strangehorizons.com/2005/20050606/field_guide-f.shtml Woo-hoo for me. |
Thanks to both of you. Interesting to see that their both rejecting. Now I don't know which way to look to see where it's going to hit me from... :) |
Patrick, the BFoD I recieved on Monday was from Carina. I had subbed it in February, but looking at the postmarks, I think my story was sitting near the top of the pile when the database went south. |
With a Long Island postmark, I'd bet that was Doug, who lives on Long Island.
-- Jackie, super sleuth |
Thanks, Marsha. The mystery continues, though... |
My form says Shawna, but hey, it's a form, the signature is typed, and the postmark is Long Island, NY. So--who knows?
But I do know that this particular story had gone on to Shawna from Carina. It was the first time I'd mentioned Clarion in my cover letter. |
How DARE you intrude upon those reporting their rejections and sales! Thirty lashes with a wet noodle!!!
Hee hee hee... -- Jackie (who's also curious about the signatures on the ROF correspondence...) |
Thanks, Sarah!
Patrick |
Yow, Patrick, great news!
SarahP |
Thanks, Justin. Actually, I've pretty much retired or sold all my stories now. I have one more out there that I think has a chance, then I have to write some more... |
You're on a roll! Congrats on the RoF sale! |
Hey, double congrats in that case Josh! RMers are hot! |
Congrats on the RoF sale, Patrick!
I had two RoF stories accepted yesterday, so maybe we'll be TOC mates. Looking forward to "Uncle Vernon's Lie." |
Thanks, Oliver. I'm glad you liked it. I'm very attached to that story. :)
Also: Sale of my story "Uncle Vernon's Lie" to Realms of Fantasy! |
Patrick, just read "Next" and really liked it. Way to be! |
Thanks, Terry.
Patrick :) |
Woo hoo! Way to go, Patrick! |
Thanks, everyone!
Patrick |
Nice job, Patrick. Congrats! |
Congrats, Patrick! |
Congratulations, Patrick! That's a nice group of sales.
Charlie |
Must be one or two bars in Glasgow I suppose.
Huge Congo rats on the recent sales |
Thanks, Sarah!
Patrick |
Yay Patrick! Congrats!
SarahP |
Out today:
My short story Next in Abyss & Apex. Also currently out: "The Western Front" in Issue 41 of The Third Alternative Add to those a sale today of "A Field Guide to Ugly Places" to Strange Horizons, and I'm happy. :) |
Cool. Let's see if we can actually meet in a bar somewhere... |
I'll be at WorldCon. Several folk from my writing group are going. |
Hi Martin. It was great to meet you too. Sorry we didn't manage to get a little longer to chat. That's cons for you, I guess. Are you going to WorldCon? If so, I'll try to catch up with you there.
Patrick |
Good to meet you at EasterCon.
Best of luck with the agent |
Anyone looking for a good book that is also in a good cause could do a lot worse than taking a look at The Book of Voices (www.bookofvoices.org)
(The code for that page is a bit screwed. It works in IE, but is nonsense in Mozilla, at the moment.) It's to be released on 24th March. Table of Contents Foreword, Caryl Phillips Introduction, Mike Butscher The Psalm of the Second Body, Catherynne M Valente The Soul Surgeons, Gregory Norminton Electric Fence, Gary Quinn Polenta, Marc Paoletti Dasi, Mohanalakshmi Rajakumar Shining the Light, Neil Grimmett Sally Moore, Yolande Sorores Home, Moshe Benarroch Beyond Each Blue Horizon, Andrew Hook The Universal Age of Deceit, Patrick Neate No Story At All, Scott Kelly On the Road to Godiva, Brian James Boatman’s Holiday, Jeffrey Ford The Flame, Tanith Lee |
Did anyone hear that? An annoying little buzzing sound, like a mosquito would make, or maybe a stink-bug? |
Wow, there's even math involved. Some people would find that unbearable! |
And to cheer things up, apparently next Monday is the most miserable day of the year. Rumours that it is dedicated to Mikal Trimm are entirely unfounded. |
Just to make me a liar, this time when I logged in, my author topic showed up. I think it's just trying to provoke me. *sigh*
Don't think I have my topic set up to send me email. Then again, I've no idea whether my email address I'm signed up with is a current one. I know nothing. |
Yup, I get my author topic everywhere I can think of. |
hmm, just dawned on me -- what "fresh stuff" are you referring to?
When I hit Fresh Stuff on the menu on the left, I get all the lastest, including author topics--my own included--whether I am logged in or not. If you mean the "what I've just visited bar just above this, not sure, let me check. SueO2 |
Someone, somewhere on the RM, very recently, said it's because you've got your topic marked to send you an email whenever anyone posts in it. (I *believe* we can do this to each individual subject topic as we like, as well. I don't know if that prevents *those* topics from showing up in the Fresh Stuff list, or not.) I haven't tested this theory, however. |
Does your own topic show up in your fresh stuff, Sue?
Patrick |
It shows up in *my* fresh stuff.
SueO2 |
Incidentally, does anyone know why my author topic never shows up in my Fresh Stuff? Is it a conspiracy? Is Trimm to blame? |
Thanks, Eric. Glad you liked it.
Jealousy, Mikal, jealousy. Not good for you. With a humble attitude, you too might join the big boys too one day... |
And there goes Marin, heaping on the irony... |
Patrick, I just read "Crab Apple" in Realms of Fantasy and enjoyed it very much. Nice work! |
Some has got it, some hasn't, eh?
(Says me who has my first story out for *months* at the moment.) |
Sure, rub it in that I haven't had a new story up in months.
Pour lemon juice on my paper cuts, while you're at it...sniff! |
Hah! Mr Trimm. Do you have a story anywhere I could review? My fingers are itching. |
Would that be this topic or your head?
(Oh, it had to be said, people!) |
Make yourselves at home. It's not like anything was going on in here anyway. Just cobwebs and lonely, cold winds. |
Oh yeah... Hi, Patrick.
Okay, what do we want to hijack his topic about next??? *G* |
Come on, Mikal. Can't a guy butt in for no reason? (BTW, check your topic.
But you're right, this is Patrick's topic -- Hi, Patrick. |
*peering around*
Who's Patrick? |
Gee, and I thought this was Patrick's topic...
Heh. (Hi, Terry!) So, to keep this on topic... How ya doing, Patrick? ;p |
Justin, how many times have you appeared in Boy's Life? I think you very well qualify for The Authors Guild, not WotF. Isn't AG membership based on readership and sales?
Seriously though, check with Kathy Wentworth at the WotF sff.net ng. |
Do the markets have to be SpecFic to preclude submitting to WotF? I never gave it any real thought, but I might still be eligible. |
Sue:
I was when I sent that last one in, quite a long time ago. I'm not entirely sure whether I am now. Depends on the circulations of Strange Horizons and The Third Alternative. I've assumed I'm not, though. Jackie: Don't worry about it. We were all doing it. |
Sorry for cluttering up the Rejection/Acceptence section, Patrick. I'll be good and give the huzzahs on the specific author pages. |
Patrick: with all those pro sales you have under your belt, are you still eligible for WOTF?
SueO2, who is just curious ... and hopes you continue to make those pro sales. |
Hi Justin.
Thanks for the congrats. Tony didn't say anything about time frame, just that he hoped the payments would come through quicker than the acceptance. So, I would assume that the optimistic time frame is less than 266 days. :) My impression is that the publisher is in no hurry with any of this. |
Hey, Patrick! I just saw your good news about the Usborne sale. Congrats!
Did Tony mention any time-frame to you about contracts? He accepted my story in April, for the other antho and hoped to have the paperwork to me by the first of May, but so far no luck. |
