What is GNU?

In the words of Richard M. Stallman, the founder of the GNU Project:

"GNU, which stands for Gnu's Not Unix, is the name for the complete Unix-compatible software system which I am writing so that I can give it away free to everyone who can use it. Several other volunteers are helping me. Contributions of time, money, programs and equipment are greatly needed."

Linux and the GNU Project

The version of GNU which is widely used today is more often known as "Linux" and many users are not aware of the extent of its connection with the GNU Project.

Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in a combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU, with Linux functioning as its kernel.

Announcements

rms was here!!!

GNU/Linux Users' Group, NIT Hamirpur, ISTE, and the Institute were proud hosts to Dr. Richard Matthew Stallman who visited our campus recently. Dr. Stallman heads the GNU Project, and is the President of the Free Software Foundation. He had dinner with the Director of the Institute, and representatives of the faculty and students on the evening of the 24th of October, where a number of possible avenues for the Institute in the Free Software world were discussed. He also gave a talk on 'Free Software in Ethics and Practice' on the 25th, at 09:25hrs, in the institute auditorium. About 600 Institute residents and members of the press attended the talk, which was very interesting and humourous in rms' usual style.

Welcome to GNU/Linux Users Group of NIT Hamirpur

GLUG NITH is a moniker for the GNU/Linux Users Group of National Institute of Technology, Hamirpur.

Our GLUG is mainly designed to cater to the GNU/Linux related needs of the students, faculty, staff, and anybody else belonging to NIT Hamirpur. We are a heterogenous mixture of people ranging from the beta testers and kernel hackers to the fresh-faced newbies, held together together by a common love for GNU/Linux in particular and Free Software in general.

Dapper Repository

A repository for Ubuntu Dapper, with useful packages is being maintained (though not very well ;)) now. Currently, only the packages for Tremulous, a GPL'd FPS/RTS game are held there. As and when I get time, I will add more packages.
Add this line to your sources.list to use the repository:
deb http://glug-nith.org/repos/ubuntu dapper/

Tremulous

Tremulous blends a team based FPS with elements of an RTS. Players can choose from 2 unique races, aliens and humans and can build several working structures in-game like an RTS. These structures provide many functions, like spawning, automated base defense (to some degree), healing functions and much more.
