     Sklba Named Diocesan Administrator
College of Consultors Moves Quickly in Election

Archdiocese of Milwaukee Auxiliary Bishop Richard J. Sklba has been elected diocesan administrator by the Archdiocesan College of Consultors. The election occurred late Friday night, May 24. As diocesan administrator, Bishop Sklba takes control of the day-to-day operation of the Church in southeastern Wisconsin, overseeing its parishes, schools, and institutions, and shepherding its nearly 700,000 Catholics. The College of Consultors, made up of nine priests, is a required body under Church law that serves as a variety of functions. One of those functions is electing a diocesan administrator when a vacant see exists.

“I have always responded to the call of the Church and, with a humble heart, do so now again,” Bishop Sklba said.

Born in Racine, Wis., on Sept. 11, 1935, Sklba was ordained a priest for the Milwaukee Archdiocese in 1960. He served as assistant pastor of St. Mary Parish in Elm Grove, Wis., before going to Rome from 1962 to 1965, to complete the equivalent of a master’s degree and doctorate degree in sacred scripture at the Pontifical Biblical Institute and the University of St. Thomas Aquinas “Angelicum.” For the next 11 years he provided weekend pastoral service to St. Veronica Parish, Milwaukee, while teaching scripture at the archdiocese’s Saint Francis Seminary.

Sklba was ordained a bishop on Dec. 19, 1979. He has been appointed to many different committees of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.
