Milwaukee Bishops Issue Statement about War in Iraq

  March 20, 2003

Over recent months, the Catholic people of southeastern Wisconsin, inspired by Pope John Paul II, have been in deep solidarity with men and women of every faith in ardent prayers for peace.

Now with the sad news that war has broken out, we resist the temptation to discouragement, and only make more fervent our prayers, fasting, and efforts on behalf of the elusive but urgent cause of world peace.

Our prayers are with our President, and all world leaders; we beseech the Lord of all nations on behalf of our men and women on the front, as we share the concern of those families and friends who eagerly await their quick and safe return.

Our concern is infinitely surpassed by that of our Heavenly Father, who sent His Son, Jesus, as Prince of Peace, and who only asks, through the Prophet Micah, that His children on earth "do right and love goodness, and walk humbly with their God."

Most Reverend Timothy M. Dolan
Archbishop of Milwaukee

Most Reverend Richard J. Sklba
Auxiliary Bishop of Milwaukee
