     International Day against Torture

The Columban Fathers' Peace and Justice office remind us that June 26 is International Day against Torture. It was officially proclaimed so by the U.N General Assembly in 1997 as International Day in Support of Victims of Torture. It is intended to emphasize the importance of the right to personal dignity and the physical security of all individuals around the world.

It is with deep concern that the practice of torture and other cruel and inhuman forms of punishment is rampant in many countries - reports by Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch and others readily attest to that fact.
