Bishop John Ricard Endorses Bread for the World Sunday

WASHINGTON: During the harvest season each fall, hundreds of churches across the country observe Bread for the World Sunday to renew their commitment to help end hunger in God’s world. Bread for the World has designed a new Worship Resource to help congregations on that Sunday celebrate their call to advocacy on behalf of hungry and poor people.

This year on October 26 or another Sunday between World Food Day (October 16) and Thanksgiving (November 27) of the local church’s choice, worshippers in Catholic parishes will join other people of faith to reflect on how God’s love in Jesus Christ is a harvest of hope for all people, pray for hungry people and take specific steps that will make a difference in their lives.

Leaders in seven Christian churches, including Bishop John Ricard, have endorsed Bread for the World Sunday as honorary co-chairs. As a community of faith we seek to shape what our Holy Father calls a global culture of solidarity, “to see all those who suffer as sisters and brothers,” said Bishop Ricard. Bread for the World Sunday gives us just such an opportunity. Bishop Ricard is Chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ International Policy Committee, which released its official statement on poverty “Making a Place at the Table” last fall.

The Bread for the World Sunday Worship Resource includes:

  • sermon aid written by Dr. Tom Long, Professor of Preaching at Emory University’s Candler School of Theology
  • creative ideas for churches to celebrate Bread for the World Sunday
  • hunger facts and questions for reflection
  • sample pulpit announcement and litany
  • bulletin inserts

Both the Worship Resource for leaders, and unlimited copies of the bulletin insert, are available free of charge. To request these materials online, go to http://www.bread.org , or call Bread for the World’s publications staff at 1-800-82-BREAD.
