     Catholic Cemeteries Honor American Veterans Memorial Day
 
 

MILWAUKEE - Thomas Champa, director of cemeteries for the Archdiocese of Milwaukee has announced the Memorial Day services and ceremonies at seven of the eight Archdiocesan cemeteries. All of the remembrance ceremonies will begin at 10 a.m. with a Mass, followed by events honoring all deceased American veterans of wars.

Some of the events will include singers, cantors, organists and trumpeters. After Mass there will be a wreath laying ceremony at all events followed by the playing of taps.

At Calvary Cemetery in Milwaukee, the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War will hold a reenactment to honor all deceased veterans and their families, including those Civil War veterans buried at Calvary. The ceremonies will include cannon fire, speeches by “President Lincoln,” and Mayor Tom Barrett. A free buffet will be provided to all attendees.

According to Champa, “These ceremonies continue our 147-year tradition of remembrance for all those who served and died on our behalf.”

The Catholic Cemeteries exercise the ministry of service that continues uninterrupted since the opening of Calvary Cemetery in 1857.
