SCHOOL OF THE AMERICAS (SOA) 2005 VIGIL

  A Life Changing Experience

In November, respect life month, you are needed at the gates of Fort Benning. This year is different from others because as early as summer 2006, Congress will vote on whether or not to close the SOA, currently called the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation (WHINSEC.) This tax supported school/institute trains Latin-American military officers. There is abundant proof that rather than defend and protect their people, many of the graduates are responsible for atrocities (repression, torture, and murder) committed against their own citizens most of whom are extremely poor.

On the weekend before Thanksgiving, join with thousands of people of all ages and many cultures from across the country and around the world, who will honor the incalculable number of victims and will insist that our government close the institute. Educational and inspirational activities are planned for the whole weekend. They culminate on Sunday with a powerful prayerful vigil at the gates of the army facility. During the solemn vigil, most people simply participate in the litanies, songs and processions while witnessing others who courageously “trespass” onto the base where they are detained and later prosecuted, fined and imprisoned for three to six months. Participation is guaranteed to change your life!
