Milwaukee Bishops to Lead Pilgrimage to Dominican Republic

Archbishop Rembert G. Weakland, O.S.B., and Auxiliary Bishop Richard J. Sklba will lead a contingent of people from the Archdiocese of Milwaukee on a nine-day pilgrimage to the Dominican Republic. The purpose of the trip is to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the establishment of a relationship with the people of Sagrada Familia (Holy Family) Parish in the province of Azua, which is located in the southwestern corner of the Dominican Republic. The group will leave Milwaukee on September 10 and will return on September 19.

The diverse contingent is comprised of nine parishioners from throughout the archdiocese and the following archdiocesan employees:
Schauneille Allen, African-American Ministry Director
Fran Cunningham, SSSF, World Mission Director
Barbara Anne Cusack, Chancellor
Robi Huddleston, OP, International Mission Coordinator
Scott McConnaha, Catholic Herald Staff Writer
Jean Mullooly, Associate Director for Communication
Rev. John Paczesny, St. Mary Hospital Chaplain
Rev. James Schuerman, Saint Francis Seminary Spiritual Director
Rev. Leonard Van Vlaenderen, Secretary to the Archbishop

The theme of the celebration is "Sharing Faith and Friendship." On Sunday, September 16, Archbishop Weakland and Bishop Sklba will join Bishop José Grullón in the Diocese of San Juan de la Maguana in the Dominican Republic to celebrate Mass and to participate in various activities connected with the celebration.

"The relationship with the people of Sagrada Familia has been a blessing for the Archdiocese of Milwaukee," said Archbishop Weakland. "Our Catholic identity as a Universal Church has deepened and our parish life has been enriched. In these past 20 years we have experienced the meaning of solidarity through the ministry and presence of 11 priests and several lay missionaries from the archdiocese, along with many adults and youth who have participated in diocesan-sponsored pilgrimages and mission programs."
