SPECULATIONS

for writers who want to be read

About Speculations

In its current incarnation, Speculations is an online resource for writers who wish to break into or increase their presence within the science fiction, fantasy, horror, and "other" speculative fiction subgenres.

Our authors are the royalty of the field, and our readers sell a huge amount of material; see Good News From The Ego Shelf for proof. We were nominated for seven Best Semiprozine Hugos in our first eight years, and a steady stream of our subscribers wind up on the Campbell ballot and the Writers of the Future short list.

We don't give out awards, play political games, or waste energy arguing about who is "qualified" to join us. If you've read this far, you're more than qualified. If you're ready to work, we're here to help.

History

Speculations was founded as a paper bimonthly magazine in 1994 by Kent Brewster and Sasha Miller. Denise Lee took over as editor after Issue Thirteen, and Susan Fry came on board in October 1999, after Issue Twenty-Nine.

After thirty issues in hardcopy, we made the difficult jump to cyberspace. The cost of printing and postage was eating our lunch, and we could see endless possibilities in taking Speculations online. Susan hung with us until Issue Forty-Six, April of 2002; since then I've been driving the bus myself.
