When Kenita Lloyd started working at the Museum for African Art two years ago, her responsibilities were supposed to be administrative. But within four months, she had the entire staff lined up outside her office, seeking help with everything from computer problems to employee disputes.

That was just the beginning. Acting on her own initiative, Ms. Lloyd established a pension plan, set up a sexual harassment policy and upgraded the entire computer system, adding Internet access and individual e-mail accounts. “When she told me what she wanted to do, I said, ‘I have no money for this,’ ” says Elsie McCabe, president of the Long Island City, Queens, museum. “She said, ‘Leave me alone, and I will fix it.’ ”

For those who know her, Ms. Lloyd’s tenacity and take-charge attitude on the job come as no surprise. In her previous position, as a salesperson for a software company, she exceeded her sales quota in her first quarter there.

Ms. Lloyd credits much of her success to her upbringing. Instead of hanging out with friends on the streets, she read a book a week at her mother’s insistence, and then discussed what she had learned.

The first in her family to finish college—she majored in marketing at New York University—Ms. Lloyd is going back for a master’s degree in nonprofit management at NYU’s Wagner school next month. After that, she hopes to head a museum herself.

“When I finish graduate school, there will be no stopping me,” says Ms. Lloyd. “I always knew I wanted to run something; I just didn’t know what it was.”
