Never shy about taking career risks, Janice Min had one worry that initially stopped her short when she was offered the editor in chief's job at Us Weekly: Would heading an A-list title turn her into the boss from hell? "I remember having this highly paranoid thought--do you become one of these monstrous people after you get a job like this?" she says.

So far, Ms. Min, a veteran of People and In Style, doesn't appear to be spoiled by the pressures of editing the No. 2 celebrity magazine. Unlike her famously demanding predecessor, Bonnie Fuller, Ms. Min has had almost no turnover among her staff. If her name appears in the gossip pages, it's always in the boring items--not counting last year's coverage of the negotiations over her $1.2 million salary.

In addition, she keeps the celebrity world in perspective. "I definitely don't go home and talk about Nick and Jessica," says Ms. Min, who is married to a history teacher and is expecting her second child in May.

At the same time, her focus on aggressive reporting and her knack for knowing what her audience wants has kept the Wenner Media title on a hot streak. Circulation has grown 67%, to 1.75 million copies, in the two and a half years that Ms. Min has been in charge. Ad revenues last year rose 31%, to $201 million, according to Publishers Information Bureau.

"I don't think just the fact that all the employees love the boss is necessarily a good thing," says Kent Brownridge, Wenner Media's former general manager. "But she pushes them hard, and they still love working for her."
