Jane Randel, 38

Vice President, Corporate Communications

Liz Claiborne Inc.

Paul Charron had been head of Liz Claiborne Inc. for several years before he even noticed Jane Randel.

“Then one day, this young woman walked into my office and told me that I was wrong to cut funding for our Women’s Work program,” recalls Mr. Charron. “I found her reasoning and delivery compelling. After that, I paid attention to Jane.”

Not one to stand out in a crowd, Ms. Randel has climbed the ranks at Claiborne by building a reputation as someone who never gets flustered and can balance any plate, no matter how full. Mr. Charron says that’s still the case even though Ms. Randel is now the mother of three children under the age of 4.

When Ms. Randel started with Claiborne 14 years ago, it had only four brands, and she worked on promoting fragrances. Today, she heads up corporate communications for the entire $4.85 billion company. Ms. Randel handles not only media inquiries but also investor relations—which means, among other things, dealing with the contentious question of whether Claiborne uses sweatshop labor overseas.

“There’s no such thing as a typical day,” remarks Ms. Randel. “There’s always something new coming.”

What really gets her excited, as Mr. Charron learned, is her work on the board of the company’s Women’s Work foundation, whose mission is to stop domestic abuse.

“There’s so much more to do,” says Ms. Randel. “This is such a widespread problem.”
