We took an interesting phone call today from an official at the Baghdad morgue. We get these calls every day – a daily tally of the violence. But this one was particularly sobering.
It turns out the official toll of violent deaths in August was just revised upwards to 1535 from 550, tripling the total. Now, we’re depressingly used to hearing about deaths here, so much so that the numbers can be numbing. But this means that a much-publicized drop-off in violence in August – heralded by both the Iraqi government and the US military as a sign that a new security effort in Baghdad was working -- apparently didn’t exist.
Operation Together Forward, the main thrust of the new strategy, involves establishing pockets of security in select neighborhoods and then slowly adding more. These latest numbers add substance to fears Together Forward creates a whack-a-mole effect: that is, secure one area and the violence will pop up somewhere else. Violent deaths now appear roughly in line with the earlier trend: 1855 in July and 1595 in June. Officials at the Baghdad morgue have no good explanation for the dramatically revised number. We’ll see what the U.S. military has to say.

Did you honestly think this White House and anyone affiliated with it, including those in Iraq would tell anyone the truth?? Bush would not know the truth if it hit him in the face and the power to be in Iraq want our military there and our money so they can keep building up the Sheite militia in order to secure the oil fields and country if and when we ever get out of this mess. The people of Iraq know all to well that this has totally placed them in harms way and our military. But to hear this administration speak they all went out to get more flowers to throw at us! Lord help our military and the people of Iraq, I fear this administration has dug a hole that we will probably never be able to get out of.
Thanks Sue F

The news about the revised death toll in Baghdad is a real shocker. Who would have suspected or even imagined that either the Iraqi government or the U.S. military would ever offer a statistical "misspeak" such as this. We place our trust in the accuracy of everything officialdom has to say, so does this mean things may not be going well in the war? It must be that the press got it wrong from the start.

Is this surprising to anyone? The Bush Administration has a solid track record of just one thing: making up facts to suit its needs, and then "revising" them afterwards, hoping that nobody will notice.
Posted by: Dave J. | Sep 6, 2006 12:04:36 PM
What is the main cause of death? Is it explosive devices, or more personal attacks?
Posted by: Shannon | Sep 6, 2006 1:46:11 PM
Jim, your reporting is incredibly biased and your tone sucks. Why don't you just report your slanted and negative version of the news instead of putting your stupid comments in the report? For example, you said, "Officials at the Baghdad morgue have no good explanation for the dramatically revised number. We’ll see what the U.S. military has to say." It's like you are a little kid complaining when getting slapped.
I would like to know how many people were killed in June or July when Saddam was in power. I bet that a lot more people were dying or suffering during Saddam's government. However, people like you don't like to report information like that. Why don't you do something useful like reporting on the 40,000 highway deaths last year or the 2000 plus reported murders in L.A. alone last year? Where is your outrage now?
The answer is that people like you fuel the hatred of our country. I don't understand why. You live in the best country and the best society ever. Yet, you constantly question our country instead of reporting on the enemies of this country: THE TERRORISTS! Do all of us a favor and stop trying to put the onus on our military and government and put it on the Islamic Fascists trying to destroy our society and way of life.

This administration couldn't tell the truth even if it benefitted them. At this point it can be summarily described as pathological. Bush & Co continue to fail, fail, fail.
They are now trying to say that any anti-war sentiments are "appeasing" the enemy as in WWII. My God!!! If Americans buy that line of crap, the only appeasers are the Americans who would allow this to go on.
What ever happened to the war speeches in the past that asked us to be brave? (Kennedy, FDR) Now all we are asked is to be very afraid and to merely 'trust' our government to do the right thing.
This is the gang that can't shoot straight, and they want us to trust them and then pay their war profiteering companies?

Thank you for your honesty in reporting this information. We can no longer trust our own leaders in Washington or the military.
Just today, out local paper described the death of a Nebraskan National Guard member in Iraq with the words "he is the eight Nebraskan National Guard member to die in the war on terror." Now we all know that the war on terror and our invasion and occupation of Iraq are not the same thing, yet the press simply parrots the official misinformation (that's the polite word for "lies") issued by our government and military.
Once again, thank you for reporting the news as you objectively see it. Without an active and independent press, I would give up all hope for our country.

Interesting...you uncover another in a long, ugly series of lies and distortions from the Bush administration, yet your network will go ahead with an even bigger lie when you present the 911 so-called documentary on Sunday. Do any of you "journalists" have any integrity left? I guess that's what happens when the government and its cronies take over the media. Will you even report this latest lie on your news broadcast? The only source of real news is the foreign media and the internet. You all should be ashamed.

What a surprise! Like the CIA secret prisons that didn't exist until today? The Bush whitehouse is more interested in getting KBR/Halliburton some work rebuilding Lebanon...
Posted by: Dan | Sep 6, 2006 5:30:42 PM
So let me get this straight:
1) ABC News reports as headline news that Iraqi violence is down
2) when that turns out not to be true, the correction is posted to a blog only
3) meanwhile, back in the headlines, instead of correcting their earlier false information ABC News is to busy releasing new false information -- this time quite intentionally -- ABC News releases and heavily advertises a fraudulent account of 9/11 designed to help the Bush Administration.
And you expect any reasonable person to conclude that ABC News is anything other than a representative of the Public Relations dept. of the Republican party?
Truly pathetic.

The Truth in Broadcasting Act passed in the summer of 2005 and yet it apparently has had little effect.
The "truth" continues to be manufactured by
the Architect and other Bush cabinet zealots. Obviously, the reapportionment of congressional districts was not enough: the Bush era neo-cons and Pentagon hawks seek to reapportion the Middle East into "Red Corporate States" through military might based on corrupt policy that was conceived via the OSP.
Are you really surprised? The US government paid the Lincoln group millions to endorse the Bush policy in Iraq: it continues to this day.
The trumped up, pro American version of "progress" in Iraq is a malicious lie that has cost thousands upon thousands their lives; coutesy of the "Values Party."

The closer we get to the November elections, the closer data like this needs to be scrutinized. Both sides will try their best to spin the data or alter it outright to suit their respective agendas; it's the media's job to make sure this does not happen.

Surprise, surprise, more disinformation from the Bush administration and the US military, and you ladled it out to the American people once again. Is it that difficult for you to do your job? How many times do you have to be lied to for you to show some modicum of skepticism about the ongoing "catapulting [of] the propaganda"? From now on, take any "official" reports with a grain of salt, investigate on your own, and act like the responsible media you're supposed to be. Which includes canning that fake, tendentious 9/11 "docudrama" you've got planned for this upcoming weekend. Bush has lied about every single aspect of disastrous march to war against iraq, fabricating allegations that Saddam was behind 9-11, posed a "huge and imminent threat to the USA", and had close ties to international terror etc.
With very important elections coming up in November you don't honestly expect him to mend his ways now.
All we have to expect is more of the same old lies, deceit and fearmongering that he stands for all over the world.

The Bush adminstratrion systematically distorts & hides information as part of its stategy to shape & control public opion. Why isn't the media, including ABC, more sceptical of the government's initial reports? For much of the Iraq War, the media has acted like a semi-official organ of the Bush administration, dutifully transmitting its repetitive talking points, frequently without offering informed views & information that would present a balanced picture & in some case throw into serious question the spurious contentions & manipulative efforts of this adminstration.

I had read that the announcement was made before the last week in august, and subsequently the last week many more bodies started rolling in.
I'm guessing the trouble makers heard the pronouncement and decided to prove it wrong by killing as many as possible that last week. The govt should save its pronouncements for the end of the month.

"We took an interesting phone call today from an official at the Baghdad morgue."
And with whom might this anonymous source be affiliated? It has been reported that the morgue is run by Shiite radical elements affiliated with Mookie Sadr, the Sadr brigades or the Mahdi brigades which have an interest in exagerating the morgue death count. And are under Iran's thumb.
As sources for "revising upwards," of course, ABC considers them way more reliable than our military sources!

Shades of "Deep Throat" indeed, a daily call from the mortuary. I don't believe your source and I don't believe you. Who were these dead people? How did they die, old age, disease, the result of a premature bomb explosion, were they "insurgents", were they even Iraqi, Syrian, Iranian? Show me the bodies, identified by someone who does not have an axe to grind. Your left wing journalism professors are cheering you on. Who cares, these people strap bombs to their children and send them out to kill whomever they can in the name of God? Go wash your computer out with soap?

Clarence, if you're a "tax and spend liberal," by definition you are not paying your own way, you're using the government to steal money from those who earned it and distribute it to those who didn't. You can only "pay your own way" from your own salary, not anyone else's. And if you're not in the top 25% of earners who are pulling 67% of the weight, try not to even open your mouth.
Mr. Sciutto, you may or may not be an editorialist, but you are not a reporter. If your goal is to stir up the partisans who visit this site and generate traffic, you're probably successful so feel free to disregard this, but if you ever decide to try to persuade an Undecided, you may discover that your unrestrained anti-Bush, anti-US-military bias has blown your credibility.
Props for not claiming to "support the troops," though. That little piece of honesty places you way ahead of a large minority on your side of the political debate.

For this to have been a deliberate lie would require both 1 - incredible tactical competence by a monolithic government operation to lie to the press and 2 - total indifference to the likelihood that the truth coming out would be devastatingly bad politics.
The tenor of the copmments is the sort of thing I hear from people who say 9-11 was an inside job.
C'mon people, have you ever been to a governemnt office? Large numbers of civil servants are incapable of pulling off a deliberate, concerted lie. Now, rumors and institutional hiney covering can happen in free systems and unfree ones. It was that insight, that "they lie for a living" to protect their positions, that helped a former CIA Director named Casey really mess with the Soviet Union. You can see the same things in our larger school districts, and that may well be what's happening over at ye old morgue.

It seems that today citizens have been filled with many part truths and half sides of the story. Honestly I do not know if the government is doing a good job or a bad one. One thing that makes me
very suspicious is when almost every american news media seems to end every story with a retorical question aimed at Bush while emersing themselves, in order to "understand", in the same culture that lives and breaths to do nothing but slaughter every christian and jew on earth. The only reason all muslims are not radical jihadists is because they read about as much of the koran as the average christian reads thier bible. The koran orders the death of all "infedels" who refuse to convert to islam. This is like the Spanish Inquisition only the Bible forbids such a wicked thing. Muslims hate jew and christian more than they love life and the outrageous thing is they openly admit it and we are hunt for some huge string of fantastic scandales, most of which are completetly rediculous and impossible. With some of these latest and greatest accusations I have heard very convincing arguments and speculation on both sides, but there is a problem we have real enemies who want to kill us! What are you going to do about that? I don't know how anyone in thier right mind would take sides with the very people who want to kill you. News Flash to all of you passionate Bush haters the 9/11 hijackers, Saddam, and Bin Ladin, agree with you; they are on your side and ready to fight. And if they have thier way they will defeate him and then turn on you! Please wake up!

SMEAR CAMPAIGNS –history
The Conservatives wandered in the wilderness from Coolidge until Reagan.
When Nixon resigned they went crazy with Hatred.
Reagan gave then a Soap Box to spread hatred.
When my Lord Clinton stomped Bush I they exploded with fury of Madness and Hatred.
They had a Congress whose leading spokesperson said in 1994 “If we get Congress we will investigate every decision made by this administration”.
True to his word Congress spent, according to GAO ($110,000,000), on Hearings and Investigations of the Clinton administration.
Their hatred became very abusive through right wing radio talk shows like Rush Limbaugh who was recorded as spreading over 10,000 LIES(intent to deceive) in 4,000 hours of his transcripts. Edit by FAIR. Author’s extrapolation.
Their smearing of Clinton was local.
Now, the self-admitted Recovering Alcoholic Bush has made us a Worldwide Laughing Stock.
South America is electing leaders who exhibit true Christian virtues like “Care for the Least Amongst thee”.
Some are yelling—“WHO IS AFRAID OF THE BIG BAD BUSH”
World leaders who have met him laugh at his ignorance.
Oh! How I long for another Clinton Type leader.
One who is exceptionally intelligent
One who knows Governance.
One who truly cares about America.
One who cares for the less fortunate.
One who knows democracies thrive under a hugh middle class.
One who when he gets wealth uses it to do good for the least amongst us.
One who knows that when a small percent own the majority of the nation’s wealth
A Christian God will not allow them to survive for centuries.
The lower 80% will Revolt.
Had Clinton kept his zipper zapped I would put him on the Empire State Building in lights 100 feet high.
I love Bill Clinton. Very much.
