25th Anniversary Commemoration Of The Four Church Women In El Salvador

For decades, untold numbers of people have been murdered during corrupt regimes reigning throughout Latin America. The killings continue in many places today. The ecumenical Central American Awareness Committee and their many collaborators sponsor a yearly event to honor the unknown dead by holding before us those whose deaths make headlines, mainly church workers.

December 2, 2005 marks the 25th anniversary of four North American women Jean Donovan, Dorothy Kazel, OSU, Maura Clarke, MM and Ita Ford, MM who that night were captured, raped and murdered in El Salvador. To commemorate them and the innumerable others, Lutheran Bishop Medardo Gomez will come from El Salvador to participate in the annual prayer service and lecture. His topic Martyrs of the Americas: Their Prophetic Message will inspire us as he shares his experiences of living through the horrors of civil war and the ongoing social violence in his country. As is his custom, his message will open us to the Gospel challenge to walk in solidarity with the poor.
