"Random sample, hold the one you need"

Hear 'N Aid, 1986

Formed by Ronnie James Dio, this was a heavy metal/hard rock famine relief benefit in the wake of USA for Africa. On May 20 and 21, 1985, 40 musicians joined together as Hear 'n Aid at A&M; Records Studios and recorded the hit "Stars." Although Rush did not participate, the resulting album contains the live version of "Distant Early Warning" from the Grace Under Pressure tour video (the same recording was included as a B-side to the "Prime Mover Strictly Limited Edition CD Single", 1987, and eventually released on the Grace Under Pressure Tour soundtrack CD).

After The Hurricane - Songs For Montserrat, 1989

"Time Stand Still" was included on this benefit album compiled by Beatles' producer George Martin following the devastation caused by Hurricane Hugo to the Carribean island of Montserrat in 1989. Rush had previously recorded the guitar overdubs for Power Windows and parts of Hold Your Fire at George Martin's Air Studios on Montserrat, which was also destroyed in the hurricane. Incidentally, the island would later fall victim to its volcano in 1995, which was eerily predicted by Neil Peart in the Hold Your Fire tourbook when he wrote:
"There is a live volcanic crater on the island, where you stand in a cloud of sulfurous mist and all around you are vents of steaming vapors and bubbling volcanic mud. When you think about the fact that this comes up right from the centre of the earth, it reminds you powerfully just how fragile terra firma really is, and how quickly a place like that could disappear beneath the beautiful Caribbean Sea."

Oh What A Feeling, Vol. 1, Janurary 1, 1996

This four CD set of "vital" Canadian music includes "Closer To The Heart". Released to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Canada's Juno Awards, proceeds from the sales of this compilation go to the CARAS Scholarship Fund, Safehaven, Starlight Foundation and the Canadian Music Therapy Trust Fund.

Guitars That Rule the World, Vol. 2: Smell the Fuzz: The Superstar Guitar Album, October 22, 1996

"Strip And Go Naked", from Alex Lifeson's solo project, Victor, was included on this compilation CD distributed by Guitar World Magazine through Metal Blade Records.
"There's a drink that [Bill Bell] invented called 'Strip and Go Naked,' which after you've had a couple, that basically is what happens. On the other side, we thought that was kind of what the song was about. We stripped the whole song down to very basic elements - it goes through a lot of different changes musically, but it's basically stripped down." - Alex Lifeson, Jam Music, February 8, 1996

Small Soldiers, July 7, 1998

During the film, the original version of "Tom Sawyer" is playing in the background during the scene where Christy, played Kirsten Dunst, is on the telephone with Alan, played by Gregory Smith (a Led Zeppelin poster is hanging on her wall). The soundtrack includes DJ Z-Trip's "Tom Sawyer" remix. A promo CD was also released containing an "Alternative Punchit Scratchit Remix" and a "Rock Slamfist Remix".
"I thought the remix of 'Tom Sawyer' was great, and a few stations have even been playing this lately. What pissed me off was that some of our fans were calling up these stations and denouncing the newer version and demanding it not be played." - Geddy Lee (source unknown)

Whatever, July 14, 1998

South Park: Bigger, Longer, & Uncut, June 22, 1999

Geddy and Alex perform "O Canada" with South Park's Terrance and Phillip (voiced by Matt Stone and Trey Parker).
"We loved it! The problem with it is we got in at the tail end. I know Matt wanted to work it into the movie itself. But, he didn't get in touch with us until the last couple of weeks of their production. So it was all kind of a "rush" job but, ah - God I can't believe I just said that (laugh). But, it was great and he's a wonderful guy, very, very funny, very smart and it was really great." - Alex Lifeson, AT&T; Celebrity Chat, February 10, 2003

Oh What A Feeling, Vol. 2, February 20, 2001

This four CD set of "vital" Canadian music includes "The Spirit of Radio"; also included is Alex Lifeson performing with Platinum Blond on "Crying Over You". Freaks And Geeks: Original Soundtrack And Score, September 14, 2004

This television series' soundtrack includes "The Spirit of Radio". Set during the 1980-1981 school year, although it only aired for one season (1999-2000), the series used many Rush music samples, characters wearing Rush t-shirts and other Rush references during its 21 episode run.

Headbanger's Bible (Boxed Set), March 21, 2005

"Working Man" is included in this 4-CD Heavy Metal Box which "collects 70 songs spotlighting the genre's first golden age between 1968 and 1991, including music from Iron Maiden, Deep Purple, Metallica, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Iron Butterfly, Pantera, Alice Cooper, Venom, Testament, Motorhead, Slayer, Rush, Megadeth, Kiss and more. Rock Band, the video game, July 8th, 2008

Unlike previous Guitar Hero II and Rock Band inclusions (covers of "YYZ" appeared in the former and "Tom Sawyer" in the latter), the original version of "Closer To The Heart", and the "Vault Edition" of "Working Man" were made available for download from the Rock Band online store on July 8th. More importantly, the previously unreleased "Working Man" Vault Edition was released at the Itunes store on July 22, 2008.
"The version features a never before heard guitar solo that Alex Lifeson did during the original recordings back in the 70’s. The song was re-mixed by Rich Chycki who is known for his work on R30 and Snakes & Arrows. A great addition to the Rush song library!" - Rush.com, July 21, 2008

"With a lot of the rock guitar games that are available now...a whole new audience is coming around to knowing who we are. We're seeing a lot of young kids that have learned about Rush that way. So its very interesting to us to see all of these 11 - 14 year old budding guitar players coming to our shows." - Alex Lifeson, KZRR Albuquerque phone interview, April 8th, 2008

Songs For Tibet - The Art Of Peace, August 12, 2008

"Hope - Live for The Art of Peace" is included on this benefit album containing "...acoustic recordings - some original for the project and some acoustic recordings of previously released songs." This version of "Hope" was nominated for the Best Rock Instrumental Performance Grammy (Rush's sixth nomination). The winner was "Peaches En Regalia" by Dweezil Zappa, from Zappa Plays Zappa.
"'This album will focus people's attention on the importance of Tibet, the gifts of its culture, and the crisis the Tibetan people are facing today,' said one of the album's organisers, Michael Wohl. The album is due for global release on iTunes on August 5, three days before the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics. It will then be available through other outlets the following week, the statement said. Wohl, from the Art of Peace Foundation, said the timing of the release was deliberate. 'We wanted to express our support for the Tibetan people and their message of peace through music, a fundamental means of expression, at a time when the eyes of the world are on China.'" - AFP News, July 22, 2008

"We also received a recording that Rush just did a few weeks back for us at a concert. Alex Lifeson did a rendition of ‘Hope’ that really breathes and let’s you appreciate the subtleties of the composition. It differs from the studio version in tempo and tone. This was a fantastic contribution on so many levels (our only acoustic instrumental)." [According to the Art Of Peace website, the song was recorded May 25th, 2008, in Regina, Saskatchewan]. - ArtOfPeaceFoundation.org, July 26, 2008

"'I think this is our sixth [Grammy] nomination -- we're, like, the Susan Luccis of rock 'n' roll...We try not to put too much emphasis on that kind of stuff, but at the same time it's always a huge compliment, so you do get excited when something like that happens. It's certainly better than being ignored'...Rush was on tour for their 2006 studio disc Snakes & Arrows when they were approached by Rupert Hine, who had produced the band's 1989 album Presto, about contributing a track to the Tibet compilation. 'We remembered this acoustic track Alex plays live and is different every night, he sort of improvises on it, so we thought that would be an easy and beautiful solution to the problem,' Lee said. 'We just recorded it live and sent it to them.'" - London Free Press, February 7, 2009

I Love You Man, March 17, 2009

Besides being full of Rush sightings, this film includes a scene where Jason Segel and Paul Rudd perform "Limelight". This performance is included on the soundtrack, along with the original Rush versions of both "Limelight" and "Tom Sawyer". For more information regarding this project, click here.

Guitar Hero 5, the video game, September 1, 2009

"The Spirit Of Radio" (live) is one of 85 songs by 83 artists included in this video game. Although Rush has been included in previous Guitar Hero releases, this one is a rarity. We have confirmed with SRO/Anthem that this recording was taken from an unreleased live performance in Manchester, England, on June 17, 1980 on the Permanent Waves Tour (Producer Terry Brown, Engineer Andy Rose, mobile truck recorder - Mobile Studio London). While there are no plans at this time for a live album release of the complete Manchester show, "anything can happen"...

Atlantic Records: Time Capsule, November 17, 2009

"Show Don't Tell", from Presto, the band's first album with Atlantic Records, is included in this limited edition boxed set which includes nine CDs featuring 165 tracks from 141 artists spanning more than six decades.
"Special Packaging Info: 9 CDs (168 tracks) plus a 7 inch 45 rpm record of Atlantic Records first major hit, Stick McGee's 'Drinkin' Wine Spo-Dee-Oh-Dee' and its b-side. Also includes 1 DVD: The PBS Documentary 'The House That Ahmet Built.' (DVD Run-Time: 115 Minutes). The Atlantic Time Capsule was created in the same spirit that infused the label's very beginnings. Just as the company's founders, to quote Ahmet, 'wanted to make the kind of records that we would want to buy,' we set out to assemble a collection that would tell a story that we would want to hear. From the onset, the idea was to present Atlantic Records 'from the inside.' The collection was compiled by a small group of passionate Atlantic staffers, who drew on rarely seen material from the company's archives, Ahmet's personal papers, and the work of staff photographers through the years. This unique package design contains a full color 140 page book filled with unseen 'from the inside' images as well as a collection of reproduced memorabilia including: a backstage pass, handbills, posters, ticket stubs and other vintage swag. Each set is completed by an individually numbered certificate of authenticity."
