Carnegie Mellon University's Heinz School to Offer Professional Master's Degree at University of Malaya in Kuala Lumpur in New Collaboration

KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA - January 19, 2006 -- Through a joint effort of Carnegie Mellon University's H. John Heinz III School of Public Policy and Management (USA) and the University of Malaya (Malaysia), students in Malaysia will be able to enroll in a Carnegie Mellon master's degree program in information technology management, to be delivered on the city campus of the University of Malaya (UM) in Kuala Lumpur.

The Master of Science in Information Technology, Managing Systems Development, or MSIT-MSD degree, is designed to meet the demand among employers and employees in Asia and worldwide for the most modern technical management skills. This professional degree provides and demonstrates a high degree of preparation and knowledge in the modern technical, organizational, and managerial capabilities required by most organizations today, especially those whose business depends on IT.

The MSIT-MSD degree offered in Kuala Lumpur is the same credential received by Carnegie Mellon students who study at the Pittsburgh campus. Students in the program will be registered as Carnegie Mellon students.

The University of Malaya is the oldest and most highly respected tertiary institution in Malaysia and one of the longest established in the region. As a premier higher education institution, UM remains the first choice university of most students, especially in traditional disciplines like medicine, law, engineering and accountancy.

"The students truly will have the best of all worlds," said Dato' Prof. Dr. Hashim b. Yaacob, DPSK, Vice Chancellor of UM. "Our new collaboration allows us to bring world-class information technology education and world-renowned credentials to the students of Malaysia, through our campus here in Kuala Lumpur."

iCarnegie, Inc., a Carnegie Mellon subsidiary, will be helping to manage the relationship. "We are delighted to be working with the University of Malaya as the first offering location for this program," said Dr. Allan Fisher, Founder and President of iCarnegie, and a former Associate Dean of Carnegie Mellon's School of Computer Science. "Their direct contact with students and their experience in delivering education to professionals will provide education in the best traditions of both Carnegie Mellon and UM."

"Today's announcement adds a new and welcome venue for Carnegie Mellon students," said Mark Wessel, Dean of the Heinz School. "The work with the University of Malaya allows greater student access to an excellent degree program, as we strive to provide educational leadership worldwide."

Ultimately, the program is intended to enhance the competitive advantage of students and their employers in today's increasingly global market. The degree program is designed for students who seek rapid career advancement in IT-related areas, in a variety of organizations. It will be offered in a part-time mode, allowing currently employed individuals to obtain a degree while continuing to advance their careers, and immediately putting what they learn into practice. It is anticipated that some companies may wish to sponsor employees for matriculation into the program.

"Strong IT management is a vital competitive weapon in the world today," said Dr. Jamaluddin Mohd Yunos, Director of the University of Malaya Centre for Continuing Education. "Carnegie Mellon is recognized as number one in information technology, so this program will graduate some of the best-trained leaders in the world."

"Companies in Malaysia should welcome the new degree holders," added Tan Sri Dato Seri Musa Bin Mohamad, Executive Chairman of Comat Academy Sdn Bhd, which will provide corporate liaison services for the program. "The fit between Carnegie Mellon, the University of Malaya, and iCarnegie is a natural."

The MSIT program is expected to accept students for classes beginning in September of 2006. More information may be found at www.msit.cmu.edu/international.
