Crimson Comeback
Published
Thursday, November 01, 2001
Riding on the crest of an amazing five-game winning streak, the Crimson walked into Harvard Stadium expecting a lazy afternoon last Saturday. Senior Dan Farley commented, "I can't really say that there was a feeling of overconfidence in our locker room, but that is exactly how we played the first half." It seems that a season of having things fall the right way had begun to convince the Crimson that they were immune to defeat.

Parent trap
Published
Thursday, November 01, 2001
Last Friday was the start of Harvard Freshmen Parents Weekend. Almost as soon as the Baby Boomers started rolling in (for the record, I am a proud Gen X-er), I looked for an escape from this seething horde of mortgage-paying people. Too many dads looking like that overbearing father from The Dead Poet's Society. Too many freshmen following their parents around looking mortified, like they had just been airdropped into Rwanda with nothing but a Nalgene full of trail mix. I spent an intoxicating night (read literally) meant to dispel these visions of possible future years as a proud parent. Then on Saturday I decided to further escape from these specters indulging in a decidedly anti-intellectual experience: the Harvard-Dartmouth football game.

Face off

For the first time in recent memory, the Harvard men's hockey team is back among the nation's elite; Harvard is currently ranked 11th in the nation in both the USA TODAY and US college hockey association polls. In the last two years, the Crimson have come a long way under coach Mark Mazzoleni, including last year's third place finish in the ECAC. Playing as they do in a league without a dominant team, they now look to be the preemptive favorite for the ECAC title.

Defending regular season champions from a year ago, the Knights should give the Crimson a good run for the ECAC Title. Clarkson is looking to avenge last season's playoff debacle; after compiling a 15-5-2 league record, the Knights fell to the #10 seeded Vermont 2-1 losing a postseason series for the first time at Cheel Arena.

Off the hook
Published

Frustration. Anger. Disappointment. These are all emotions that every student experiences during four years here. Beyond the usual classes, TFs, professors, and papers, however, Harvard students have something else to complain about—the phone service. Ever the bane of a student's existence, the telephone office has given us good reason to be bitter.

Right thinking

What was originally intended to be one week spent highlighting conservative viewpoints on campus had to be extended this past month to four. Conservative Awareness Month, sponsored by the Harvard Republican Club, was initially designed as a week in the fall dedicated to presenting speakers and discussing issues from a perspective that is held by a minority on campus but by a significant number outside the walls of Harvard Yard.

Refugee all stars
Published
Thursday, November 01, 2001
As the United States and its allies continue their retaliatory strikes against the Taliban regime that rules the majority of Afghanistan, the stream of refugees seeking to flee across the Afghan borders has grown into a mighty river. An estimate by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) put the number of Afghan refugees in Pakistan at over 2 million prior to the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Since then the number of refugees attempting to cross into Pakistan has risen sharply. Students at Harvard concerned about the impending humanitarian crisis in Pakistan have taken matters into their own hands.

The end of dating
Published
Thursday, November 01, 2001
Strangely enough, dating seems to be one area where Harvard is actually typical. Whether at a Big 10 School like Penn State or at a tiny Catholic school like St. Vincent, my inside reporters gave me accounts remarkably similar to the situation so lamented here.
