 *   MusicPath Live Networked Pianos between Philadelphia, PA and Nova Scotia Canada
Monday, June 27, 7:30–8:30 pm, Hall D Atrium   add to planner
Tuesday, June 28, 2–3 pm, Hall D Atrium   add to planner

Demonstration co-sponsored by Yamaha Disklavier

Hear a live networked distributed performance and see the piano in Philadelphia being played live from Acadia University in Canada. Conference attendees will also have the chance to play live with the musician in Nova Scotia.

The MusicPath software, created at Acadia University, has enabled the connection of digital acoustic pianos over IP. While previous projects have successfully used videoconferencing for music, this project actually enables the remote piano keys and pedals to be controlled from a distance. Piano pedagogues listen to the true acoustic performance, not amplified sound. Since the fall of 2003, a teenage piano prodigy in remote Nova Scotia has been receiving lessons from a piano pedagogue in metro Toronto. In addition, some music examinations and interactive classes have been conducted over this IP connection.

Media interest in MusicPath continues. Both TechTV and the New York Times have been excited by the live demonstrations. Oscar Peterson, internationally renowned jazz pianist, calls MusicPath a "breakthrough in music." MusicPath was developed at Acadia University by Jim Diamond and Christoph Both; Karen Wilder is MusicPath Project Manager.

 *   Live Remote Scanning Electron Microscopy with Lehigh University's ImagiNations Program
Tuesday, June 28, 10–11 am, Exhibit Hall A Lobby   add to planner

Real-time, remote access from the XL-30 Environmental Scanning Electron Microscope to the K–12 classroom is one of the newest and most exciting educational tools now available from the Nanocharacterization Lab housed within the Center for Advanced Materials and Nanotechnology at Lehigh University. Educational Technology Specialist George Motter of Lehigh University's Library and Technology Services and Andrea Harmer, Director of Web-based Materials Science Education, will demonstrate how this new tool is allowing students to actively explore their own specimen's physical and chemical attributes down to the near-nano scale using Internet2.

 *   The Science of Fireworks: Live from The Franklin Institute
Tuesday, June 28, 11:30 am–12:30 pm, Exhibit Hall A Lobby   add to planner

Discover the science behind what makes fireworks sparkle, whistle, and light up the night sky. The Franklin Institute's science education team will help you spark a revolution in learning! The program will demonstrate MPEG-2 video for classroom use. MPEG-2 is the new digital video compression standard, which allows the coding of studio quality video for digital TV, high-density CD-ROMs, and TV-broadcasting.

 *   Lewis and Clark: Re-Enactment Live from the Field in Great Falls, Montana
Tuesday, June 28, 1–1:30 pm, Exhibit Hall A Lobby   add to planner
Wednesday, June 29, 1–1:30 pm, Exhibit Hall A Lobby   add to planner

Participate in this live interactive H.323 videoconference made possible by the portable satellite transmitter connecting to the Internet2 Abilene network to bring the Lewis and Clark re-enactors live from the field in Great Falls, Montana. Interact with re-enactors retracing the expedition and learn how K–12s across the country are incorporating this in their classrooms over Internet2. Join the nation as it commemorates the bicentennial of the Corps of Discovery's historic journey across America—to discover what it taught America then, how it changed America after, and what a retracing of that journey can teach America today.

 *   Bronx WRITeS: Honoring Students' Voices through Performance-based Poetry
Tuesday, June 28, 3–4 pm, Exhibit Hall A Lobby   add to planner

Students from the Bronx who are participating in a Federal Arts in Education grant project called POETRY Express will demonstrate their original poetry and performance techniques using the power of Internet2 by conducting a joint poetry session from Columbia University and the PACC.

 *   SeaTrek Live from Mote Marine Labs in Florida

In this Internet2 videoconference, Mote Marine Laboratory provides a media-rich presentation covering four SeaTrek programs (sharks, sea turtles, manatees and rovs). Highlights from each of the four programs are given, which includes interactive games, video clips and science demonstrations. This is followed by an overview of the SeaTrek Web site, the other SeaTrek programs, and how to order programs. The conference concludes with Questions-and-Answers about SeaTrek and videoconferencing technology.
