While we are trying to get all the sponsor stuff organised, the good news is there are more sponsors confirming. We can’t release the details just yet but its been an overwhelming response. Apart from the BIG sponsors we also have a host of smaller organisations who could not afford the sponsorship slabs that were set but their contributions are just as valuable for us. We have termed them all as “supporting” organisations and there is a huge number of them.

Now with less than a month away, its time to push things to full swing and get the word out. We shall be releasing some posters before the end of the week and those of you who grabbed our little buttons and banners, we would be extremely grateful if you grabbed the posters as well. The posters can be printed out or just sent out as PDFs to people who you may think would be interested in the event.

Look out for the next few set of announcements, there are some exciting ones. Including some stuff about a few invited speakers.

See you at freed.in/2007

Sponsorship & Support

freed.in gets tremendous support from the community and the industry alike. While we do have several smaller supporters who provide us not only with money but also with their time and ensure that we have a successful event there are the big sponsors as well. The sponsors are the ones who ensure that we can actually run the event again and again. This year before we could even announce our sponsorship levels and terms and conditions, the top spot was taken. Our event is still relatively small and our “Principal” sponsor needs to spend only Two Lakhs to get that spot, its a spot that many sponsors vie for and this year our principal sponsor is….

IntelThe community would like to thank Intel for coming up so rapidly and readily with the sponsorship. Apart from the money, Intel is also sponsoring the travel expenses of one of our speakers. We will disclose the details of all speakers as soon as the talk selection process has been completed and published.

For now, its THANK YOU Intel, your support means a lot to us.

freed.in - By the Community

Once again the ugly beast raises its head. It has slept peacefully for nearly a year, but now it is hungry and setting forth to gobble up the unsuspecting, the hard-working, the masochistic and the fun-loving.

Yes, it’s that time of the year again! freed.in (formerly Freedel) needs volunteers — are YOU ready to be chained to the rock and await the coming of the scaly fire-breathing monster? If you are willing to sell your soul (and your body for a few days) in September 2007, all for a lousy T-shirt and some even more lousy free conference food, then don’t think twice — send your details immediately to:

volunteers at freed dot in

Between the 10th and the 29th of September you will be expected to work like a dog, get no sleep, stand in the burning sun (or pouring rain, depending on the weather), smile at participants who abuse you, smile even wider at organisers who abuse you, be treated like dirt and not even get to attend the talks. And what do you get out of it? Just:

The undying gratitude (lasts approximately 35 seconds after the conference is over) of the community, ILUGD, the organisers, the speakers and the participants. If all this sounds exciting, send your details quick! We need your:

Call for Papers

While the call for papers technically ended today, we decided to extend it a few more days. We do have about 20 talks registered and we will have some invited speakers as well as the workshops and tutorials. There seems to have been a great amount of confusion in using the conference management system and since it was a first for us also, we put together a little howto. Please go and register immediately. The slots are filling up rapidly now.

See you all at freed.in

Jawaharlal Nehru University and ILUG-D bring you freed.in/2007

The School of Information Technology, Jawaharlal Nehru University (SIT/JNU), and ILUG-Delhi bring you freed.in/2007.

JNU’s role as a centre of excellence in education and research makes it an ideal venue for bringing together the academic and FOSS communities. After the success of last year’s joint event, we have agreed to co-host the event again, so as to have the focus of the event build on its roots in academia.

According to sources at JNU, the idea is to have such collaborative efforts blossom into a flourishing, and continued rapport between SIT/JNU, and ILUG-Delhi. Along these lines, last year we also conducted a joint mentorship program with the Bio-Informatics Centre of SIT, JNU to develop open-source software in the domains of bio-informatics, and bio-technology. The source code for the software is under active development, and is available on a public repository.

ILUG-Delhi would like to thank SIT/JNU for its continued support!

We look forward to continue working closely together.

Presentations being accepted

We are accepting proposals for two different types of presentation:
you can submit a proposal for a talk or a tutorial. If in doubt, you
want to submit a talk proposal rather than a tutorial proposal.

Call for Papers

Talks are the main part of the conference: a series of presentations
on Free Software related subjects. This year there will be 20-30
presentations. Presenters will be given a 50 minute slot, which
includes up to 10 minutes for questions.

The main programme also has 8 tutorial slots. Tutorials are longer and
more interactive presentations, with slots lasting for 160 minutes,
giving the speaker time to interact with the audience. Proposals for
tutorials should be clear about the level of expertise required of the
audience.

Most presentations and tutorials will be technical in nature, but
proposals for presentations on other aspects of Free Software and Free
Culture, such as educational and cultural aspects are welcome.
