Bad Fruit: Home

Why the Bad Fruit Foundation?

The incredibly talented comic Rosalie Gale does a bit in her act about her desire to start a non-profit organization – and then decides she's better off starting a revolution instead.

At the Bad Fruit Foundation, we find that very funny – and very true. We're clear about what we want to do: Provide support to King County artists (actors, comics, dancers, filmmakers, musicians, painters, photographers, poets, sculptors, singers, writers and others) who are under-insured and facing life-altering illnesses so that they won't have to sacrifice their art for their wellness.

Sometimes, however, we're not sure how to get there! The amount of time an effort to get an organization like this off the ground is amazing: 3,4 and sometimes 5 meetings in a month; mountains of paper work (if you think a tax form is tricky, just try filling out the documentation to make your non-profit corporation tax-exempt!) and brain-numbing internet research on social services, health care and insurance options.

But it's worth it when we bump into a supporter who says “Your gift bag was a life saver! My girlfriend drank something really stupid and got really sick – and we were on our way to the E. R. when I saw the Poison Control magnet on the fridge and thought to call them. We would've spent a fortune to be told that she'd be okay.”

And it all worth it when we put together an event like last year's Cover the Uninsured Week show – and we realized that every person in the place had put down their drink was standing on a chair to see Hands of Kali dance. Like our board VP Hayley always says “we've got to celebrate that which we intend to protect.”

Take a minute and check out our “Mission Statement.” That's the formal, “government-sanctioned” version of what we're trying to do. And if you've got an idea or a resource that you think would help us get there, please e-mail us at BadFruitBoard@aol.com

There are so many ways you can help, so please, contact us at if you've got an interest in being one of those crazy do-gooding artists who use art to help artists.
