Identity Theft

Rep. Waxman is concerned about the growing problem of identity theft in an increasingly electronic age. Identity theft occurs when someone uses your personal information (such as social security number or credit card) without your consent to commit fraud or other crimes. In 2005, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) reported almost 700,000 identity theft and consumer fraud complaints for losses of over $680 million.

Victims of identity theft may need months or years to recover, so it is important to protect yourself and to react quickly if you believe you are a victim. The FTC maintains an identity theft hotline at (877) ID-THEFT (438-4338). The FTC also uses online services to help Americans protect themselves from identity theft, and the links below can help you to learn more.
