System Requirements

The following is a description of the minimum system you can use to run Test Drive 4. If your system does not meet or exceed these requirements, then the game will run incorrectly, or not at all.
  • An IBM PC or compatible computer
  • Windows 95 or 98
  • A Pentium 90 or faster processor
  • 16 MB Ram
  • A DirectX compatible super-VGA video card
  • A DirectX compatible 16-bit sound card
  • A 2X CD-ROM Drive
  • 220 MB of available hard disk space

  • DirectX 5.0 is included on the CD and must be installed before playing.

  • For enhanced gameplay, a Pentium 166 with a 3dfx graphics accelerator card and 32MB of RAM is recommended.

  • To play multiplayer games, you'll need a Pentium 166 or faster that's connected to a TCP/IP enabled local area network, or a 14.4Kbps modem, or a second computer via serial cable.

  2. RIGHT click on the TD4 icon.
  3. LEFT click on "Open".
  4. Double click on the Setup folder.
  5. Double click on the InstData folder.
  6. Double click the DirectX 7 folder.
  7. Double click on the file named DXSETUP.EXE.
  8. Click on "Install DirectX" or "Reinstall DirectX", and select OK or YES to each question.
  9. Ignore any warnings you may receive by clicking on YES.
  10. Restart windows to complete the installation.

Error Messages

"When attempting to play the 3dfx version, an error message appears that reads "A required .DLL file, GLIDE 2X.DLL was not found".
You'll need to install the latest Glide drivers available for your 3dfx card. If you are using a Voodoo Graphics or Voodoo Rush card, then you can find these drivers in the 3DFXDRV folder of your Test Drive 4 CD-ROM. Or, you can download the latest version available from the 3dfx website at http://www.3dfx.com.

For more information on this topic and contact information on a wide variety of hardware vendors, please see our How to Update your Drivers FAQ.

Installation Problems

"Nothing happens when insert the game CD into my CD-ROM drive."
The AutoPlay feature may be turned off on your computer.

If you wish to bring up the game without enabling AutoPlay, you can start the setup process manually by double clicking on the "My Computer" icon on your Windows desktop, then on your CD-ROM drive icon, then on "SETUP.EXE".

If a CD-ROM icon does not appear when you open the "My Computer" icon, or if clicking on SETUP.exe doesn't start your game either, then your CD-ROM drive may be in "MS-DOS compatibility mode".

To learn how to enable AutoPlay on your system, or to learn how to see if your CD-ROM drive is in MS-DOS compatibility mode, please refer to our Windows 95/98 General Troubleshooting FAQ.
"The Installer starts to copy files, but then just quits to the desktop."
Make sure that you have enough hard drive space available on your system before installing. If you don't have at least 220 Megabytes free, the game can't install.

If you have enough space, check the shiny underside of the CD for fingerprints, smudges, scratches, or anything else that may cause your drive to have trouble reading it.

If the CD looks clean and undamaged, then your CD-ROM drive may be running in "MS-DOS Compatibility Mode".

To learn how to see if your CD-ROM drive is in MS-DOS compatibility mode, please refer to our Windows 95/98 General Troubleshooting FAQ.

Lockups and Crashes

"The game freezes on a black screen immediately after the intro movie stops playing."
The movie may not have properly closed itself down. Launch the game again, and when the screen turns black, press the spacebar on your keyboard. This should bring you to the Test Drive Main menu.
"During Launch the screen just turns black or quits back to Windows without any error message."
There are several methods that you can try to fix this problem:

    1. Shut down any other applications that you may have running on your system such as screen savers, virus scanners, etc.

    2. If you are using a fast machine such as a Pentium 233 or faster, you may need to turn down video hardware acceleration. See the section below on "Turning down Windows' video hardware acceleration".

    3. Try resetting your computer's video resolution to 640x480 with 256 colors.

    4. Update your video card drivers.

For further information on any of these solutions, please see the following documents:

    Windows 95/98 General Troubleshooting FAQ
Windows 95/98 Video Card Troubleshooting FAQ
How to Update your Drivers FAQ
"The game randomly freezes, crashes, or locks up the computer."
First, shut down all other applications that may be running on your computer. Other applications can interfere with the game's operation. For instructions on how to do this, please see our Windows 95/98 General Troubleshooting FAQ.

If this doesn't help, then the software drivers that Windows uses to communicate with your hardware may be out of date, or incompatible with the game. Install the latest DirectX compatible drivers available for your video and sound card from the card's manufacturer. If you have already updated to the latest driver version from the manufacturer and the problem persists, you may want to see if there are any reference drivers available from the chip manufacturer. Reference drivers are usually more standardized than the manufacturer's versions and may work better with a wider variety of games.

For more information on this topic and contact information on a wide variety of hardware vendors, please see our How to Update your Drivers FAQ.

Video Problems

"The game plays in a small window surrounded by a black border instead of playing in the entire screen."
Your video card may be having difficulty when switching between the various screen resolutions used in Test Drive 4. To fix the problem, try switching your Windows desktop resolution to 640x480 before playing.

For information on changing your display settings, refer to our Windows 95/98 Video Card Troubleshooting FAQ.
"I'm using a Diamond Viper PCI and the game's colors are severely corrupted."
There is no known fix for the problem at this time. Your best bet is to download and install the latest drivers available for your card. If this doesn't help, then you'll need to select high resolution mode in the options menu before playing like this:

    1. Launch the game
    2. Select your country with the arrow keys on your keyboard.
    3. Select the icon of the wrench and press <Enter> to get to the options menu.
    4. Select the icon of a computer monitor and press <Enter>.
    5. Select the "High" icon and press enter.
    6. Press the <Esc> key to get back to the main menu and then try playing again.

For help with updating your drivers, see our How to Update your Drivers FAQ.
"I'm using a Matrox Mystique and the entire display seems to be crunched into a small portion of my screen."
This is usually the result of an incorrect monitor setting in the Windows display control panel. Make sure that your monitor is set up correctly in Windows before trying again. If you need assistance with this procedure, please contact your computer company or monitor manufacturer.
Standard video troubleshooting:
    1. Make sure that your display is set for 16-bit color mode before playing.

    2. If you are using Windows '98, disable Active desktop.

    3. Update your video card drivers to the latest version available from the card manufacturer, or the latest reference driver available for your card's chipset.

    4. Make sure that you have installed DirectX version 7.0 or higher on your system before playing. If you have already done this and the problem occurs anyway, then you'll need to update your video card drivers with the latest versions available from the manufacturer.

For more information about DirectX, please see our DirectX Frequently Asked Questions.

For information on changing your display settings, refer to our Windows 95/98 Video Card Troubleshooting FAQ.

Controller Problems

"I can't get my joystick, gamepad or steering wheel to work with Test Drive 4."
Test Drive 4 uses the settings you specified for your controller in the Windows control panel. In order for your controller to work properly in the game, you must first install and configure it in Windows. To learn how to properly set up your controller in the Windows Control Panel, see our Windows 95/98 Controller Troubleshooting FAQ.

Multiplayer Problems

"My computer is connected to a Local area network but the LAN play option is not available from the multiplayer menu."
Test Drive 4 requires that the TCP/IP Networking protocol is installed and configured properly on your computer before the network option will become available in the Multiplayer menu. For more information on installing and configuring TCP/IP, please refer to our Windows 95/98 Modem/Network Troubleshooting FAQ.
"All of the computers that join my LAN game get kicked back to the menu when the game is about to start."
This problem usually occurs when the host system is significantly faster or slower than the other computers that are trying to join. When trying to start a LAN game with 3 or more players, the host should never be the fastest or the slowest machine. Ideally, the computer that represents the most average speed on the network should be used as the host to ensure that this problem will not occur.
"I can't connect to another computer over the modem (or a serial cable)."
This problem usually occurs when the host system is significantly faster than the system that's attempting to connect. For modem and serial games, the host should always be the slower system.

Sound Problems

"My card is DirectX compatible, but I can't hear any sound or music in the game."
    1. Make sure that your speakers are turned on and any volume controls on them are turned up.
    2. Check your Windows volume settings by clicking on the small yellow speaker icon on your taskbar.
    3. Check the in-game volume settings in the "Sound Options" menu (available from the main Options menu)

If none of the steps above work, then make sure you have installed DirectX version 6.0 from the CD, or the latest version available from Microsoft. If you have already tried this too, then you'll need to update your sound card drivers to the latest version available from the card's manufacturer.

To learn how to install DirectX from the CD, see the section of this document labeled "DirectX Installation".

For more information about DirectX, please see our DirectX Frequently Asked Questions.

To learn how to update your sound card Drivers, refer to our How to Update your Drivers FAQ.

Game Performance Questions

"How can I improve the game's overall performance?"
    1. If you're not running the 3dfx version, select the "Low" setting in the Options/Display Settings menu.

    2. For all video cards, reduce the view distance in the Display menu by selecting the camera icon and using the down arrow key on your keyboard.

    3. Press [F1] to reduce the size of the gameplay window while actually playing the game.

    4. Make that your system meets the minimum system requirements to run the game as listed at the top of this document. If it does not, you may be able to increase performance by following some of tips in this section, but don't be surprised if performance still suffers.

    5. Close ALL other applications prior to running Test Drive 4. For details on this procedure, please see our Windows 95/98 General Troubleshooting FAQ.

    6. Try playing in a lower screen resolution.

Standard Troubleshooting
