Francis Agu died after Take Me To Jesus    31/3/2007

The death of Actor, director and film producer, Francis Agu ,last Tuesday, March 20 came as another rude shock to the entire Nigerian film community. Francis Agu, a prominent member of the Hastrup family in the rested Amaka Igwe’s soap opera entitled Checkmate died at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) following a brief illness associated to cough. Friends of the artiste also reveal that Francis had been an asthmatic patient, while the leadership of the producers’ guild believe that the 41 year of entertainer died of heart break. Madu Chikwendu, President of the Association of Movie Producers (AMP) said this at a press Conference on Wednesday against the backdrop that most filmmakers are merely strugling to survive without commensurate return on their investments. However, Francis’ demise to some people is connected to some spirituality.(every death is any way). They recount that shortly before his illness which began in October last year, the late filmmaker had shot a film entitled Take Me To Jesus. The flick starred actors like Kate Henshaw, Clarion Chukwura and Abuja based actor, Seye Johnson. He was said to have been referred from Uyo General Hospital to LUTH where he breath his last. That movie, Take Me To Jesus was however never completed owing to Francis’ ill health and other logistic problems.

Francis was not married until his death, but was known to be very close to popular script writer, Emem Isong whose films he also directed most of the time. A source close to the family said that arrangements for his burial have not been decided but that it was agreed that it should come after the Easter celebrations.

The late actor who hails from Enugu State is one of the pioneer Nollywood actors who came to the scene at the wake of Nollywood in 1993. He would also be remembered for his performance in one of the earliest Nollywood films, Living In Bondage.
