Archbishop's Task Force for Catholic Education in Bay View, St. Francis, Cudahy

Discussions among parish pastoral leaders regarding the state of Catholic education in the Bay View/St. Francis/Cudahy neighborhoods date back several years. These leaders engaged in discussions to identify ways to strengthen the Catholic educational opportunities offered to families in the area.

One theme was common – that the school communities could not provide as strong an overall program individually as they could collectively. The leaders determined that if the communities did not work together to resolve the educational issues that faced them, all would fail and, ultimately, children would be on the losing end. There would be strength in a united effort and the resulting educational system would have the opportunity to tap in to the talents of people from all of the school and parish communities.

Parish leaders met with Archbishop Dolan to share their concerns as well as their commitment to providing Catholic educational opportunities for families in the neighborhoods. As a result of these meetings, Archbishop Dolan commissioned the Task Force that is charged with developing a plan for affordable, accessible, and high-quality Catholic education in this area in June 2003.

The Task Force is to examine the future of Catholic schools in the Bay View/St. Francis/Cudahy area. Archbishop Dolan also developed and shared a mandate that calls for a plan for continuing affordable, accessible, and high-quality Catholic education in the Bay View/St. Francis/Cudahy region on a long-term basis, building upon excellent tradition. The plan should be comprehensive and inclusive of all six parishes in the area and involve potential partnerships with Thomas More High School.

Archbishop Dolan requested that the Task Force consider all options and conduct wide consultation within the parish communities. A comprehensive recommendation is requested by early 2004.

The Task Force was formed with representation from each parish and school community and began meeting in July 2003.

The Task Force is comprised of the following members:
