     Catholic Stewardship Appeal Awards Announced

More than $150,000 has been awarded to 37 Catholic parishes, schools and organizations from the surplus of funds raised for the 2005 Catholic Stewardship Appeal (CSA), Milwaukee Archbishop Timothy Dolan announced Friday, June 2.

The 2005 CSA raised more than $7.6 million, surpassing its goal of $7.4 million. The CSA is an annual campaign that funds programs and services benefiting more than 700,000 Catholics and others in the 10-county Archdiocese of Milwaukee.

In March 2005, Archbishop Dolan announced the creation of a system that would award funds to Catholic educational and charitable programs, two priorities identified by CSA supporters.

“The annual Appeal is critical to securing funds to support the diverse needs of a large archdiocese,” Archbishop Dolan said. “We were fortunate to exceed the goal for a fourth year in a row. For that reason, I believe it is essential the archdiocese extends its financial blessing to support additional Catholic programs in southeastern Wisconsin.”

An Awards Committee reviewed applications and made recommendations. Members included Dick and Carol Richards, chairs of the 2005 CSA; John Kordsmeier, chair of the Catholic Charities Board of Directors; and John Stollenwerk, chair of the Catholic Schools Advisory Board.

“Once again, we were overwhelmed with requests,” Archbishop Dolan said. “The needs are great and the people, parishes and organizations are willing and ready to respond with creative initiatives. The generosity of talent and compassion is strong throughout the archdiocese and it is my prayer that the financial support of the Catholic Stewardship Appeal will continue to grow at the pace of the past four years.”

Archbishop Dolan will meet with representatives from the organizations who have received awards on Tuesday, July 11, at the Archbishop Cousins Catholic Center, 3501 S. Lake Dr., St. Francis.
