SOLIDARITY WITH THOSE GATHERING AT THE SCHOOL OF THE AMERICAS

On Sunday November 19th tens of thousands of women, men and children from across the United States and around the world will converge at Fort Benning, Georgia site of the U.S. Army School of the Americas (SOA.) Since 1963 the school has trained nearly 60,000 Latin American military officers at the expense of U.S. taxpayers. Evidence abounds that among the school's graduates are notorious dictators, human rights abusers and the intellectual perpetrators of primarily civilian assassinations and massacres. Some well-known victims are Archbishop Oscar Romero, the four North American churchwomen, the six Jesuits, their housekeeper and her daughter.

Every year since 1990 - near the date of the martyrdom of the six Jesuits, their housekeeper and her daughter - increasing numbers gather to pray, fast and engage in acts of civil disobedience which the participants believe are acts of holy obedience. They believe that Faith requires courageous acts to bring about a more just world.

You are invited to join in this act of solidarity with our sister and brother victims of the graduates of our tax supported SOA. Those unable to make the trip to Georgia this week-end are invited to participate in the prayer vigil to be held on Sunday afternoon 1:00 - 3:00 at the School Sisters of Saint Francis Moutherhouse - Saint Joseph Center (Layton Blvd and Greenfield Avenue.) If you are not able to personally attend that gathering you are encouraged to participate at home by downloading the prayer service at by clicking here
